Jack’s 2009 Super Bowl Picks

This year’s Super Bowl features the NFL’s best defense against one of its best offensive units.  The Steelers have lead most defensive statistics all season long, but their previous four games are a bit concerning.  They gave up 31 points to Cleveland, then shutout Cleveland, but gave up 24 points to San Diego and 14 points to the Ravens.  This doesn’t show that the Steelers are falling apart on defense, but it does show that they are vulnerable.  Probably the biggest single factor that will decide this game is Kurt Warner against the Steeler’s blitzing defense.  Pittsburgh bliztes as much as anyone in the league, but, unfortunately for them, Kurt Warner is one of the best quarterbacks in recent history against the blitz.  He tore through Philadelphia, who also likes to bring the heat often, and I think he will have a lot of success against Pitt.  Couple that with the fact that Arizona defense has been playing better and creating turnover, and the Cardinals have found a running game for balance, and you have a winning combination for an upset in the Super Bowl.  Take the points, but don’t be surprised if the Cards walk away as World Champs.
