10-20-13 | New England Patriots v. NY Jets +4.5 | Top | 27-30 | Win | 100 | 73 h 42 m | Show |
This is the second meeting of the season between the Patriots and Jets with New England winning the first game by a score of 13-10. Not a whole lot can be taken from that game as it was just the second game of the season and was played in horrible conditions. Still, the Jets lost and will be out for some payback and I feel they are in an excellent spot to avenge that defeat. They have been a very schizophrenic team this season and they lose badly at Tennessee then win in Atlanta the following week only to come back and put up a dud last week at home against the Steelers. I played against New York in that game as I felt it was a letdown spot and sure enough, it didn't show up. Now the tables are turned as the Jets want to bounce back from that and a victory here would put them just one game back in the AFC East. They have alternated wins and losses all season so it seems fitting that they will pull out a victory here. The Patriots are coming off a huge win last week at home against the Saints, handing New Orleans its first loss of the season. New England was staring at a loss right in the face but a fantastic last minute drive set up the game winning touchdown with just five seconds remaining to move the Patriots to 5-1 on the season. This may not be considered a letdown situation from that win because the Patriots and Jets are hated rivals so New England is surely not looking past New York. However, because of the win last week and the ugly Jets loss, we are getting a fantastic line. New England is not the same team from years past and the Jets are better than what most expected yet we are seeing a very inflated line that the public is still going to ride. Turnovers have been the big problem for the Jets and that was the case in the first meeting as they lost the turnover battle 4-0 so it is near impossible to win a game with that disadvantage although they nearly did. Those miscues have put the defense in some tough spots but they are still ranked fourth overall and have allowed more than 328 total yards only once. On the other side, quarterback Geno Smith has improved immensely since that first meeting and the Patriots defense continues to get banged up and will be without three key starters here. The fall into a great situation as we play on home underdogs that are coming off a loss that average more yards per pass attempt than their opponent does which is coming off a win. This situation is 32-13-2 ATS (71.1 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (398) New York Jets

10-20-13 | San Diego Chargers v. Jacksonville Jaguars +9.5 | Top | 24-6 | Loss | -133 | 73 h 32 m | Show |
Jacksonville finally came away with a cover last week as it stayed within the massive number at Denver to move to 1-5 ATS on the season. Normally that would mean possibly laying off the following week but that is not going to be the case here as there is still plenty of value in this number that is severely inflated yet again. The Jaguars have looked a lot better the last couple weeks. Despite losing to the Rams, they outgained them and they are just -33 total yards the last two weeks after being -652 total yards in their first four games. They are also home for just the second time in five weeks as four of their last five games were on the road and while they have been outscored 65-5 in their two home games, those came against the Chiefs and Colts and we cannot be comparing the Chargers to those two teams. Yes, San Diego just defeated the Colts but that means little this week. Indianapolis was coming off a big home win over Seattle while the Chargers were out to bounceback from their last against the Raiders the previous week. Mission accomplished. Now San Diego heads back on the road on a short week in an early game to face the worst team in football and is laying over a touchdown. Good luck with that one. To their credit, the Chargers have exceeded expectations already as not many saw even an average season this year but they are 3-3 and have played relatively well on offense over the last few weeks. Still, this is the far from ideal spot to be in and with a bye coming up, walking out of here with just a small victory is all they can hope for. The Chargers have numerous angles going against them. We play on teams after the first month of the season with a winning percentage of less than .250 going up against teams coming off a win over a team with a winning record. This situation is 57-37-2 ATS (61.6 percent) since 2002 and if the opponent is playing on a short week, the situation is 15-4 ATS (78.9 percent). Going from a home underdog to a road favorite is very rare in this league and does not suit many teams very well. That is certainly the case with San Diego as it is 0-11 ATS in its last 11 games when going from an underdog to a favorite the next week no matter the venue. Additionally, we play on underdogs or pickems that are averaging 17 or fewer ppg, after allowing 35 points or more last game. This situation is 55-26 ATS (67.9 percent) over the last 10 seasons. This is good of a spot as any for Jacksonville to grab its first outright win of the season. 10* (400) Jacksonville Jaguars

10-19-13 | Washington State +39 v. Oregon | 38-62 | Win | 100 | 73 h 8 m | Show
Oregon simply continues to dominate. We were on the wrong side of the Ducks last week and while Washington did in fact give them a challenge, the Ducks were able to pull away late like they have done it seems like forever. They have won eight straight games and have covered every one of those as well which is saying something considering these lines are going through the roof. They have covered five spreads of 26.5 points or more this season but some of those have been excruciatingly close. Oregon covered against Nichols St. by four points, against California by a half-point and against Colorado by three points, there has to be a cutoff number at some point and considering this is the third time in four games it has been in the high 30's, this could be it as there is no more room to take it. Their last home game was against California and the Ducks were favored by 38.5 points and now they are favored by more than that against a team that is hands down much better than the Golden Bears. It may not have showed last week for Washington St. as it got pummeled at home against Oregon St. by 28 points. The game should have been a lot closer but the Cougars completely imploded at the end as they turned the ball over six times and allowed 35 unanswered points in the final 17 minutes. How bad was it? They committed turnovers on their final five drives of the game as well as turnover on down which led to 28 points for the Beavers. Now they head to Oregon which seems like a suicide mission but this team was playing very well prior to that with four wins in its first six games. The offense is potent enough to hang around here and this is by far the best team Washington St. has had in a while yet it was able to cover the previous three meetings against Oregon with all of those spreads in the 30's as well. Oregon has a home game against undefeated and ninth ranked UCLA on deck so not only is there a possibility of a lookahead, but the Ducks are not going to risk any starters being on the field late should the margin become big .While the Ducks have been covering machines, Washington St. is 18-7 ATS in its last 25 road games against teams averaging 5.9 or more yppl since 1992. Meanwhile head coach Mike Leach has been a great rebounder as his teams are a perfect 8-0 ATS in road games off a loss by 21 points or more to a conference opponent. 9* (341) Washington St. Cougars

10-19-13 | Utah v. Arizona -4 | Top | 24-35 | Win | 100 | 82 h 21 m | Show |
We won with Utah last week at it upset Stanford at home by six points as a 7.5-point underdog. It was a huge victory for the Utes which were coming off a tough home loss against UCLA the previous week but now we have a great spot to go against them. After the win, the fans stormed the field and the celebration was on meaning they could still be celebrating. Utah now hits the road for just the second time this season and the first time outside the state of Utah which puts it into an even more difficult spot. It is the latest out-of-state opener for Utah since 1947. The lone road game resulted in a win at BYU despite the fact the Utes were outgained by 41 total yards while going just 1-14 on their third down conversion attempts. Utah is 3-6 in its nine road Pac 12 games with the three wins coming by eight ppg but the six losses coming by 17 ppg. Arizona meanwhile is coming off a two-game roadtrip as it lost in Washington and then faced USC last week in a very tough spot as the Trojans were playing their first game with a new coach. The Wildcats are now 3-2 and have defeated no team of significance so we have yet to see them defeat a quality opponent but this team is good enough to do so, especially at home where they are 9-2 over their last 11 games. The defense needs to get back on track as it is going the wrong way. Each week this season, the Wildcats have given up more yards and with the exception of the Texas-San Antonio game, more points than the game before. With 11 starters back from last season, this was supposed to be the strong suit of the team but after two lackluster efforts on the road, we will see a much better performance at home. Utah did an awesome job last week in bottling up the Stanford running game but I don't see it happening two weeks in a row. This year, the Wildcats are ranked 14th nationally averaging 262.2 rushing ypg, while running back Ka'Deem Carey is averaging 142.3 ypg, which is fourth best in the country. After hosting Utah this weekend, the Wildcats hit the road yet again for back-to-back games against Colorado and California before the slate puts Arizona back in Tucson for three of their final four conference contests. The Wildcats have a great situation going as we play against teams that are coming off an upset win as a home underdog of seven points or more, in October games. This situation is 26-5 ATS (83.9 percent) over the last five seasons. 10* (394) Arizona Wildcats

10-19-13 | Georgia State v. Texas State -16.5 | 17-24 | Loss | -105 | 71 h 53 m | Show
We won with Texas St. three weeks ago when it defeated Wyoming as a big home underdog. Since then, the Bobcats have lost two straight games, both in conference action, to fall to 0-2 in their first season in the Sun Belt Conference. They were beaten pretty badly at Louisiana two weeks ago and last week, they lost at home against UL-Monroe despite outgaining the Warhawks by 166 total yards. Texas St. threw a pick six in the first quarter and then threw another early in the third quarter to fall behind 14-0 and that was literally a 28-point swing and they were returned 71 and 74 yards. The winning touchdown was scored with 18 second remaining so this was a game that should have gone the Bobcats way. Now they have a chance to get into the win column and grab their first SBC victory against the only other winless team in the conference and this opponent could not come at a better time. Georgia St. is off to a 0-6 start in its first season in the FBS which does not come as a surprise as it went 1-10 last season against mostly FCS opponents. The Panthers are coming off a heartbreaking loss last week against Troy as they were tied late in the fourth quarter but gave up a touchdown and were denied their first ever FBS win. It was a gallant effort but one that will be tough to recover from, especially hitting the road. Georgia St. has been competitive at the betting window though as it has covered four straight games despite getting outgained by over 900 yards in the process. That is presenting us with some value here as the linesmakers could not put this number very high based on that winning streak against the spread. The Panthers have played well in both home games and while this is the easiest road test so far, this team is 2-14 all-time on the highway. Despite a 1-2 record at home, the Bobcats have outgained all three opponents and are outgaining them close to 150 ypg and after last week, they will not be holding back here, especially knowing their first conference victory is there for the taking. Both of their home wins this season have been by more than what they are laying this week and while the number does seem high, I really think it could be a lot higher. The Bobcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game and under head coach Dennis Franchione, they are 8-0 ATS in their eight games off a loss by seven points or less to a conference opponent. 9* (372) Texas St. Bobcats

10-19-13 | Colorado State v. Wyoming -6.5 | Top | 52-22 | Loss | -110 | 72 h 40 m | Show |
We lost a tough one last week with Wyoming as the Cowboys dominated New Mexico for a half and looked as though they were going to run away with it but they let up and allowed the Lobos back into the game before pulling away late and giving up a garbage touchdown which made it a seven-point final. We will get back on them again this week though as the too close for comfort finish benefits us this time around as there should be no letting up this week. Wyoming is 2-0 in the MWC as it also defeated Air Force and currently is the lone undefeated team in the East Division. This will mark the third straight game against winless conference teams as the three teams combined are 0-8 in the MWC. With three of the final five games on the road, the Cowboys have to take advantage of their big home field edge as right now they are 3-0 and host Colorado St. for a second straight year in this Border War rivalry. The Rams lost last week against San Jose St. at home by a touchdown but they were outgained by 161 total yards so it was more dominating of a loss than the final score states. They are now 2-4 on the season and have been outgained in all four losses while winning the yardage battle in both victories. However one victory came against Cal Poly of the FCS and the other came against UTEP which is 1-5 on the season. Colorado St. has lost both of its road games but both were closer than expected as they are 2-0 ATS on the highway and the ATS loss against the Spartans snapped a four-game covering streak. I think the success at the betting window is giving us a better than expected line. Going back, the Rams have lost 10 straight games on the road including a loss here last season by 14 points, their fourth straight setback in this Border War series. We should see some big plays from the Wyoming offense. Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith has thrown 15 touchdown passes this season, three of them spanning at least 40 yards. Meanwhile, Colorado St.'s defense has been especially porous over the last two games, allowing 796 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and five scores over 40 yards. Colorado St. is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 road games against teams with a completion percentage of 62 percent or better while going 2-10 ATS in its last 12 road games after allowing 31 or more points in two straight games. Meanwhile, Wyoming is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 home games against teams allowing 31 or more ppg while under head coach Dave Christensen, it is 11-0 ATS in 11 games following a home victory. 10* (338) Wyoming Cowboys

10-19-13 | Syracuse v. Georgia Tech -7 | Top | 0-56 | Win | 100 | 71 h 9 m | Show |
After getting trounced at home against Clemson, Syracuse bounced back with a road win at NC State in its first ever ACC road game. The Orange have now won three of their last four games to get to .500 on the season but asking them to win a second straight road game is too much to ask for, especially in these conditions. Facing Georgia Tech and its triple option attack is bad enough for teams that have seen it before but now Syracuse is having its first look at it and on a normal week no less. This is definitely a surprising start for Syracuse as it was not picked to do much this season following the losses of some key personnel as well as its head coach but the schedule has worked in its favor over the last month. This is the second of four road contests in a five-game stretch for the Orange as this looks to be where the bubble bursts. Georgia Tech meanwhile has lost three straight games and head coach Paul Johnson is hearing about it. After rolling to a 3-0 start to the season, the Yellow Jackets hit a brutal part of the schedule with games against Virginia Tech, Miami and BYU which are a combined 15-3 this year. Those last two games came on the road and after playing two straight ACC games, the Yellow Jackets had to travel to Utah for a game against BYU and that certainly had letdown written all over it. Georgia Tech logged nearly 5,000 miles and traveled three time zones over the last two weeks with a back-to-back road games at Miami and BYU so being able to remain home this week is a big edge. The Yellow Jackets are favored by a touchdown which was the same line they were favored by against Virginia Tech and there is no way the Hokies and Orange are on that same level. Georgia Tech comes into the game leading the ACC in rushing, averaging 290.3 ypg led by running back David Sims and quarterback Vad Lee. The pair have combined for 635 yards this season and 10 touchdowns on the ground. It will be tough for the Orange to contain that. Georgia Tech is 10-1 ATS in 11 games under Johnson after a game where they forced no turnovers while Syracuse is 0-8 ATS in its last eight games coming off an upset win by 14 points or more. Additionally, we play against teams that are coming off a win over a conference rival as an underdog of six or more points, in October games. This situation is 58-27 ATS (68.2 percent) over the last five seasons. 10* (346) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

10-19-13 | Texas Tech v. West Virginia +6 | 37-27 | Loss | -110 | 64 h 56 m | Show
Three weeks ago, West Virginia upset Oklahoma St. at home at 19.5-point underdogs but the week after it went on the road and got smashed at Baylor by 31 points while getting outgained by a whopping 476 total yards. After that dismantling, the Mountaineers hit their bye week and it could not have come at a better time as they needed a period of recovery following that. It also gave them some extra time to prepare for Texas Tech and its potent offensive attack. To no surprise, West Virginia is 0-3 on the road and 3-0 at home and while wins over William & Mary and Georgia St. are hardly impressive, that win over the Cowboys cannot be discounted. We are seeing the majority of the action coming in on the road team here as it is considered a short number that the Red Raiders are laying. Texas Tech is off to a 6-0 start and it is ranked 16th in the latest AP Poll. The Red Raiders have had little stand in their way to remaining undefeated although they are coming off a close seven-point win against Iowa St. last week. They have defeated teams that are a combined 10-17 and none of them are currently over .500. Granted, West Virginia is in that category as well but the Red Raiders have only played twice on the road and those came against teams that are 1-4 and 2-3 and of those three wins, two are against teams from the FCS. That makes this the biggest road test to date. Not only do the Mountaineers want to make up for that game against Baylor but they will be out for some revenge as well. A year ago, Texas Tech had little trouble with West Virginia, beating the Mountaineers 49-14 in Lubbock. A sea of Red Raiders fans poured onto the turf, making it difficult for the No. 5-ranked Mountaineers to exit the scene of what started a five-game losing streak. "Coach Holgorsen's been showing us that video every day," said nose guard Shaq Rowell, who recalled wading through the mob on his way back to the visitors locker room. West Virginia has a great situation on its side as we play on home underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points after two consecutive games where they forced three or more turnovers against opponent after a game with a turnover margin of -2 or worse. This situation is 26-4 ATS (86.7 percent) since 1992. Additionally, the Mountaineers are 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game while the Red Raiders are 1-5 ATS in their last six games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game. 9* (328) West Virginia Mountaineers

10-19-13 | Southern Mississippi v. East Carolina -22.5 | 14-55 | Win | 100 | 64 h 55 m | Show
This is a big number to be laying with East Carolina but this is a perfect opportunity to do so. The Pirates are coming off an excruciating loss last week at Tulane as they lost in triple overtime in a game they really had no business losing. They outgained the Green Wave by 233 total yards but a few plays did them in. in the third quarter, East Carolina was down to the Tulane three-yard line threatening to take the lead when they were intercepted by Derrick Strozier and he returned 99 yards for a touchdown which gave the Green Wave a 16-6 lead. Additionally, the Pirates missed a 42-yard field goal at the end of regulation that would have won the game and then missed a 34-yard field goal in their third overtime possession. It was their game to win and they messed it up so we can bank on them coming back strong here to improve upon their 4-1 record. The only other loss was a five-point setback at home against Virginia Tech which happened to be their last home game. The game against Tulane was the third road game in three weeks so as trip home again a week opponent is just what East Carolina needs. Southern Mississippi continues to struggle. After defeating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl in 2011 to finish at 12-2, the Golden Eagles would go on to lose all 12 of their games last season and have piggybacked that this year with losses in their first five games. A home loss to Texas St. in the season opener was tough to take as Southern Mississippi outgained the Bobcats by 193 total yards but came up a touchdown short. The Golden Eagles then hit the road for three straight road games and the results were ugly, losing by 43, 17 and 53 points. Coming off that roadtrip was tough but playing at home against one of the worst teams in the country in Florida International gave then a great opportunity to snap their 16-game losing streak but instead, they lost by a point and I do not see how this team can recover from that. Even with a bye week, it will be difficult to get up for this one. Turnovers are killing the Golden Eagles as they have committed 19 while taking the ball away just six times. East Carolina is dead even in turnover margin and while predicting what happens with the ball here, turnovers are contagious. East Carolina falls into a tremendous situation as we play against road underdogs of 21.5 to 31 points that are coming off an upset loss as a favorite, with a losing record. This situation is 22-3 ATS (88 percent) over the last 10 seasons with the average point differential being over 31 ppg. 9* (322) East Carolina Pirates

10-18-13 | Central Florida +13 v. Louisville | Top | 38-35 | Win | 100 | 59 h 52 m | Show |
People are definitely high on Louisville right now and for pretty good reason. The Cardinals have won all of their games by double-digits and they have dominated the yardage totals in every game. Overall, they are outgaining opponents by 275.3 ypg which is an enormous margin but I feel it is very skewed because they have played no one. Of all of the teams ranked in the top 55 in the Sagarin Power Ratings, the Cardinals have played the easiest schedule of all of them, ranked 125th in the nation. They are just 3-3 against the number as their spreads have been inflated which I feel is the case again here even though this one may seem low to some. Central Florida is 4-1 on the season with the lone defeat coming against South Carolina by just three points. The Knights figure to be one of the few teams that can challenge Louisville in the AAC and this game obviously goes a long way in trying to do so. They went 10-4 last season with three of those losses coming by five, two and six points and the other coming at Ohio St. by 15 points in the second game of the season. Central Florida had its best offensive season since 2007 as it averaged 35.4 ppg and while it is slightly below that this year, it is still a very potent attack. Louisville is second in the nation in total defense and first in the country in scoring defense so it will not be easy for the Knights, but again, the Cardinals have not faced any sort of offense. They have played teams ranked 78th, 101st, 122nd, 103rd and 77th in total offense not to mention playing Eastern Kentucky out of the FCS. The Knights are coming off their worst performance of the season against Memphis but that is not a bad thing as it fits into the bounce angle plus they have had two weeks to get ready for this game. After converting 55 percent of its third downs through the first four games of the season, Central Florida was just 5-14 (35.7 percent) against Memphis but it is much better than that shows. Blake Bortles is the best quarterback that the Cardinal secondary has faced up to this point, and he has an opportunity to score points in bunches against a largely untested Louisville defense. The Cardinals are 1-5 ATS in their last six games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game while the Knights are 6-0 ATS in their last six games after accumulating less than 275 total yards in their previous game. Additionally, Central Florida falls into an outstanding power situation as we play against home favorites of 10.5 to 21 points that are allowing 3.25 or less rushing ypc, after allowing 1.0 or less rushing ypc last game. This situation is 23-4 ATS (85.2 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (307) Central Florida Knights

10-17-13 | Seattle Seahawks v. Arizona Cardinals +7 | Top | 34-22 | Loss | -115 | 57 h 42 m | Show |
Seattle bounced back with a home victory over Tennessee following its first loss of the season the previous week at Indianapolis. The Seahawks only won by seven points but it was still a dominating performance as they outgained the Texans by 181 total yards and the only touchdown allowed came by the special teams as Tennessee returned a botched field goal for a touchdown. It was a rare non-cover for Seattle at home and now it hits the road where things have not been as successful. The Seahawks are just 5-5-1 ATS on the road under quarterback Russell Wilson including 2-4-1 ATS as road favorites. This is the first road divisional game of the season and last year, Seattle lost all three of those games. Arizona hung around for three and a half quarters last week against the 49ers as it was down by just two points before San Francisco scored the final 10 points of the game to pull away for the cover. The Cardinals actually outgained the 49ers which was the fourth time this season that they have outgained their opponent. They are looking to bounce back from that effort in San Francisco but they are also looking for some payback here after the Seahawks showed no mercy in a 58-0 thumping in Seattle in the second meeting last season. Arizona has played on Thursday night twice before but both of those games were on the road making this their first home appearance which will give it a big home edge. Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons, who returned from ACL surgery three weeks ago after leading the team in sacks last year, may miss Thursday's game in Arizona after hyper-extending his elbow Sunday against the Titans. If the Seahawks had a usual six-day turnaround, Clemons might have been ready to play Seattle's next game, head coach Pete Carroll said, but it's doubtful with the Cards game on Thursday. That is a huge loss for the defense. The Seahawks are third in both overall and scoring defense but the tow highest point totals allowed have come in their last two road games. They are 1-5 ATS in their last six games as road favorites against opponents that are coming off a double-digit loss. Additionally, the Seahawks are 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 games after allowing less than 250 total yards in their previous game while the Cardinals are 5-0 ATS in their last five games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game. Don't be surprised to see the Cardinals take this one straight up but even a loss should keep them inside this inflated number. 10* (304) Arizona Cardinals

10-17-13 | Miami (Florida) v. North Carolina +8.5 | Top | 27-23 | Win | 100 | 52 h 20 m | Show |
This is a good setup for North Carolina as the contrarian situation for both sides is giving us added value. No one seems to be giving the Tar Heels any chance to win here which is typically the case when one team is undefeated and the other is going in the opposite direction. That is why the games are played on the field and not on paper and if there is a time North Carolina turns its season around, this is it. Though on the brink of suffering their fourth consecutive loss in the same regular season for the first time since 2007, coach Larry Fedora thinks the season is salvageable but a win here is almost a necessity. With two ACC losses (Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech), the Tar Heels need to run the table to have a shot at getting a share of the Coastal Division title. More important, if they lose to Miami, they must win five of their last six games to get the six wins needed for bowl eligibility. Miami is in the AP top ten for the first time since 2009 and has not started a season at 6-0 since 2004 so it is entering some unchartered territory. This team is experienced, deep and athletic but with the exception of beating Florida, the wins have not been impressive. The Hurricanes were actually outgained by the Gators by 201 total yards so the fact they came out of there with a victory is surprising to begin with. They are very potent on offense which many think will cause problems against the Tar Heels defense but defensively, the Hurricanes could struggle here. They are ranked first in passing defense but senior quarterback Bryn Renner is scheduled to be back in the starting lineup after missing the loss at Virginia Tech because of a foot injury. He leads ACC quarterbacks in passing with his average of 279.3 ypg. North Carolina would like to get a running game going as well as this is not an impossible task against a Miami defense that has let up close to 170 rushing yards per game in 2013. Not only will a good rushing attack help North Carolina stay balanced on offense and keep the Miami defense guessing, but it will also help keep the Hurricanes' offense off the field. This is the first home night game since 2009 for North Carolina and as long as it doesn't overly excited, this is a big edge for the Tar Heels. Miami has covered four straight games and North Carolina has been on the losing ATS side in its last three games and those are the streaks that I like going against. The Hurricanes are 3-14 ATS coming off consecutive wins both straight up and against the number. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 home games against teams with a winning road record. 10* (306) North Carolina Tar Heels

10-14-13 | Indianapolis Colts v. San Diego Chargers +2.5 | Top | 9-19 | Win | 100 | 11 h 40 m | Show |
The Colts are off to a 4-1 start this season and they are now once again perceived as a public team in the betting markets. They come in following three straight wins including a big road victory at San Francisco and last week, they knocked Seattle from the rank of the unbeatens. With a home game against Denver next week, this presents the perfect sandwich spot to go against the Colts. Indianapolis is actually in the same position as San Diego was in last week as the Chargers were coming off a win as a home underdog against the Cowboys and now finds themselves as a road favorite. Teams in this situation have had a tough time in this reversal situation over the years. Additionally, while this is just the third road game of the season for the Colts, it is the third in the last four weeks including two separate west coast trip which makes it an even tougher travel situation. San Diego is now 2-3 on the season following a loss at Oakland last week despite the fact it outgained the Raiders by 128 total yards. This is just the third home game of the season for the Chargers as they lost to Houston, a game they should have won as they blew a 21-point lead, and then defeated the Cowboys. This is a really big game for the Chargers as they likely are already out of the divisional race with Denver and Kansas City but getting to 3-3 puts them right in the mix in the Wild Card race. The Chargers offense has been playing very well this season under the new coaching staff and system as they have scored touchdowns on 26.4 percent of their drives which is fourth in the NFL. San Diego's per-drive production is a direct result of its revitalized passing game, with quarterback Philip Rivers currently ranking sixth in the league in passing. The Colts are ranked sixth in the league in passing defense but they have played against only one quarterback that is ranked in the top 20 and that is a huge difference. Not counting the Jaguars game, which we cannot do in the case for most opponents that have gone against them, the Colts have been outgained in two of their other four games and are -72 yards in those four games combined. Next week's game against the Broncos cannot be overlooked for the Colts as it will mark Peyton Manning's much-anticipated return to Lucas Oil Stadium and the biggest game of the season to date for Indianapolis. San Diego has covered five straight games following a loss and it will add to that run again tonight. 10* (230) San Diego Chargers

10-13-13 | New Orleans Saints v. New England Patriots -2.5 | Top | 27-30 | Win | 100 | 74 h 7 m | Show |
We played against the Patriots last Sunday and while it was a spot of going against them since they were undefeated, it was also a spot on playing Cincinnati which was coming off a loss at Cleveland the previous week. This week we have a very similar scenario in our favor only it actually favors New England. The Patriots head home after suffering that first defeat where they are 2-0 on the season but to be fair, they really have not been tested. Playing the Jets and Buccaneers is not the same as playing the Saints but they have a ton of motivation on their side. As does quarterback Tom Brady who is steaming after not putting up a touchdown last week, thus snapping his 52-game streak with at least one touchdown pass. Ironically, he was chasing Drew Brees who has 54 straight games with a touchdown pass. It was also only the fourth time since 2001 (when Brady took over in New England) that the Patriots had been held to six points or less. How did they do the previous three times? They won 44-13, 31-10 and 40-7 so its safe to say he bounces back pretty well. Additionally, the Patriots' offense should improve with the probability of Rob Gronkowski and Stevan Ridley joining Danny Amendola in the lineup. New Orleans is now 5-0 following its win at Chicago last week as it seems to have put last year's disaster behind them. Many figured there would be a turnaround for the Saints so it is not a huge surprise they are off to a 5-0 start especially considering they have played the 26th ranked schedule in the NFL and I think even that isn't low enough. This is the second straight road game for New Orleans and its second straight road game on grass which may not seem huge but considering how strong of a team they are indoors, it does in fact make a difference. While the offense is up to its old tricks, it is the defense that has made the most progress, going from being ranked dead last in total defense last year to being ranked 11th this season. The Saints are 0-3 ATS in the second of back-to-back road games played on grass fields. The Patriots defense has been good enough to carry the offense that has yet to find its stride due to a depleted receiving corps. They are ranked second in points allowed this season so they do have the ability to slow down the Saints to a degree. Chicago did a very good job as they held them to 357 yards and forced four field goals and that is the gameplan to slow down the offense as much as possible. Favorites are now 13-4 ATS in New Orleans's last 17 games. 10* (226) New England Patriots

10-13-13 | Oakland Raiders +9.5 v. Kansas City Chiefs | 7-24 | Loss | -125 | 52 h 5 m | Show
The Raiders took care of business last Sunday night (or Monday morning depending where you are) as they defeated the Chargers to move to 2-3 on the season. They have been a pleasant surprise this far and were a couple plays away from being 3-2 as they were almost able to pull off the upset against the Colts. One of the losses came against the Broncos which has been the case for every team that has played Denver and the other was against Washington after it blew a 14-0 lead so all-in-all, it has not been a bad start considering many still thought they would be the worst team in football. Base on this line however, linesmakers are still thinking this is a pretty bad team or they are thinking the public is going to hammer the Chiefs. Either way, it makes no sense considering that Oakland was getting 16 points at Denver and is getting 10 points in Kansas City. Denver is only six points better than the Chiefs on a neutral field? I don't think so. Even in their losses, the Raiders have fought until the bitter end of games and there will be a ton of fight against one of their most bitter rivals this Sunday. The Chiefs are an even bigger surprise as they are a perfect 5-0 to open the season, on of just three remaining undefeated teams in the league. They were able to pull away late at Tennessee last week to get the cover, their third straight spread winner so they have been cashing for their backers. This is the first of three straight home games and then a game at Buffalo so should Kansas City keep going the way it is and not turning the ball over, it could feasibly be sitting at 9-0 before heading to Denver in an already much anticipated game. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves though as the Chiefs have to take care of business here. Even though the Chiefs have been much worse in recent years, so have the Raiders and yet it is Oakland that has had the upper hand in this series as it has covered seven straight meetings in Kansas City and now Kansas City is favored by the most it has been favored by over this stretch and by a lot. Additionally, the Chiefs have not been a double-digit favorite since 2003 when it wax favored by 10 points over, you guessed it, Oakland. The Raiders lost that game by just three points. As a matter of fact, the Chiefs are 0-11 ATS in their last 11 games as a divisional favorite and while this team is different, I don't think it has made that many leaps forward just yet. Look for a closer than expected game here. 9* (203) Oakland Raiders

10-13-13 | Philadelphia Eagles v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2 | 31-20 | Loss | -100 | 52 h 2 m | Show
Tampa Bay is back off its bye week and it came at a good time for things to settle down following the Josh Freeman circus. Now that it is all done, the Buccaneers can go back to playing football and are looking forward to a fresh start. They are sitting at 0-4 and while being winless is no good, they are not that bad of a winless team. Three of their losses have come by a total of six points with the other defeat coming at New England so they have been very respectable at least. Obviously the offense has been a nightmare, hence the change at quarterback and while rookie Mike Glennon wasn't very good in his debut, he has that now behind him and he comes in with two weeks of preparation for this one after being thrown into the fire in his first start. The one thing that Tampa Bay does have is a strong defense as it is ranked 13th overall and eighth in points allowed. That will come into play here as holding the Saints to 16 points on this field was a huge accomplishment. The Eagles took care of the Giants last week to send them to 0-5 while improving themselves to 2-3 which is actually good for a tie for first place in the woeful NFC East. The high-flying offense has not disappointed as the Eagles are ranked second in the NFL in total offense and eighth in scoring offense but the problem is they have been outscored in three losses and it almost could have been four in their opener against Washington. The passing defense is bad but the overall defense is even worse as Philadelphia is ranked 31st in total defense and 30th in scoring defense so as good as the offense can be, the defense is letting it down. Nick Foles may be under center this week taking the place of an injured Michael Vick but I do not feel there is an edge either way. This is the third straight road game for the Eagles which is never easy and they are also in a divisional sandwich with a home game on deck against the Cowboys and a rematch with the Giants right after that. While I don't expect Glennon to go off here, he very well could as the Eagles have allowed four of five opponents to throw for over 300 yards and their overall passing defense is ranked 29th in the league. The Buccaneers also fall into the same situation that the Steelers do as they are also part of an incredible situation backing winless teams. Underdogs that are at least 0-4 and are coming off a bye are 21-4 ATS the last 25 instances with two of those four defeats missing by just a point. 9* (206) Tampa Bay Buccaneers

10-13-13 | Cincinnati Bengals v. Buffalo Bills +7 | 27-24 | Win | 100 | 52 h 1 m | Show
The Bills lost a tough game in Cleveland as they could not overcome the loss of quarterback E.J. Manual who is expected to be out for a significant amount of time. That is a tough loss but I think Buffalo will be just fine and it is catching a severely overinflated number here based on the Manual loss. The Bills have been excellent on their home field with wins over Carolina and Baltimore and taking New England down to the final seconds. Obviously the concern is at quarterback and after watching Jeff Tuel struggles last week after coming it, it should be. However, the Bills are going with Thad Lewis and while not many know who he is, he should fit right in. Lewis, who spent the first five weeks of the season on the practice squad, was signed to the active roster. That is big since he knows the offense inside and out. "He can run, he can extend plays, he can run the read option. He can throw the ball extremely well," head coach Doug Marrone said. "One of the questions people are going to ask is, 'Does he know the whole system?' He does. He knows everything. He's as bright as hell." Lewis said he has a "great grasp" of the Bills' game plan. "Every week, you don't just sit there on the practice squad and not prepare as if you're the starter. That's your job. This is what you're supposed to do," he said. "You have to learn, you have to know the things that you need to do, so I've been doing that every week. It will be a regular week for me, except that I get the chance to start this Sunday." He started a game for Cleveland last year and threw for 204 yards while completing 69 percent of his passes with one touchdown and one interception. The Bengals won last week but did not look great in doing so although the weather did play a part. The offense has not been very good and seems to be stuck in neutral as the Bengals are ranked 22nd in total offense and 25th in scoring offense. They have put up more than 21 points only once and that was against Green bay where they put up just 297 total yards. Insiders report that his teammates are having some doubts about quarterback Andy Dalton, with his passes too often lacking accuracy in practice, as well as on Sundays. That is not a good thing and he may be starting to feel the pressure. On the other side, Bills safety Jairus Byrd is expected to play Sunday which will be his season debut. I think Lewis can thrive off the home crowd and this is the perfect spot to put him in with two difficult road games on deck. 9* (218) Buffalo Bills

10-13-13 | St. Louis Rams v. Houston Texans -7 | Top | 38-13 | Loss | -115 | 73 h 23 m | Show |
The Texans have lost three straight games to fall to 2-3 on the season and the natives are getting restless. After making it into the Divisional Playoff Round in each of the last two seasons, Houston once again came into the season with high expectations. Three straight losses and people are calling for quarterback Matt Schaub to be benched and head coach Gary Kubiak to be fired. I think it is a little premature for this as Houston is just two games behind the Colts in the AFC South. Yes, Schaub has tossed a pick six in a record four straight games but those things happen and not all were his fault to begin with. The interesting part is that the Texans have outgained all five of their opponents despite the losing record and they are currently sitting at seventh in total offense and first in total defense. Those rankings tell me that this is a very strong team that is getting scrutiny for no reason just yet. The Rams snapped their three-game losing streak last week as they took out the hapless Jaguars at home by 14 points to improve to a similar 2-3. It was a much needed victory as a loss their could have sent the season into a complete downward spiral but now St. Louis comes in with some momentum and confidence but I think it will be short lived. The Rams were actually outgained by the Jaguars last week and have been outgained in four of their five games with the only exception being Atlanta where they outgained the Falcons by 28 total yards thanks to a late garbage score. Even that seven-point loss is looking worse after the struggles that Atlanta is going through. Prior to the Jacksonville game, the Rams defense had allowed 31, 31 and 34 points in their previous three games ad I expect another poor effort here. St. Louis is giving up an average of 169 yards per game on the ground during its last three games and on the season, it has allowed 11 touchdown passes while just picking three passes and has allowed an 7.4 ypa average. The Rams offense has not been much better as it is ranked 29th in total offense and 20th in scoring offense and facing this defense will be a challenge. In particular, the injury-plagued Rams offensive line figures to have problems with the active Houston front seven. The Texans are first in passing defense and third in defensive ypa average and while the rushing defense has struggled at times, the Rams pose no threat as it is close to the bottom in all rushing categories. The Texans are 0-5 ATS which is a streak I like going against as since 2007, teams that are on 0-5 ATS runs have gone 25-11 ATS (69%) in their next game. I expect the Texans to easily break that skid here. 10* (214) Houston Texans

10-13-13 | Pittsburgh Steelers +2.5 v. NY Jets | Top | 19-6 | Win | 100 | 72 h 40 m | Show |
The Steelers are winless and are looking at missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season for the first time ever under head coach Mike Tomlin. They are 0-4 following their loss in London against the Vikings so the bye week could not have come at a better time. Although extremely rare, making the playoffs at 0-4 has been done in the past so Pittsburgh is looking at making a run to see what happens. And it will mean starting here this Sunday in New York as it needs to put together a complete game. The Steelers still possess a top ten defense but it is one that has not created a turnover yet this season and that is a rarity for this stop unit. On the opposite side, the offense has 11 turnovers so it is safe to say that a team with a -11 turnover margin differential will not be seeing the postseason. The thing is that Pittsburgh is only two games out of first place in the AFC North so no team is running away with this division. The Jets are coming off a come-from-behind win over the Falcons on Monday night and now have a short week to get ready for a team that has had two weeks off. That is not an easy spot to begin with. The Jets surprised some people with a 2-1 start but after getting throttled at Tennessee, everyone was on their case once again. Now off a big win, people are back on the bandwagon and that is how this league works as opinions change from week to week. Hats off to quarterback Geno Smith who put together that game winning drive which culminated the best game of his young career as he put up a 147.7 passer rating. Now it is time to face a real defense as the first five opponents are not on the same lever as the Steelers defense. On top of that, under defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, the Steelers are 16-2 against rookie quarterbacks so giving him two weeks to prepare is only icing on the cake. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has turned the ball over six times in his last two games, but now has a legitimate running back with the return of rookie Le'Veon Bell, who scored the Steelers' only two rushing touchdowns on the season during his NFL debut against the Vikings. The Steelers are also part of an incredible situation backing winless teams. Underdogs that are at least 0-4 and are coming off a bye are 21-4 ATS the last 25 instances with two of those four defeats missing by just a point. To make matters even more desperate for the Steelers, they went 0-4 in the preseason for they are 0-8 ATS and SU which they finally break this week. 10* (215) Pittsburgh Steelers

10-12-13 | Middle Tenn State v. North Texas -6.5 | Top | 7-34 | Win | 100 | 101 h 54 m | Show |
We have had a fairly good read on North Texas and a lot of it has to do with where the game is taking place. We played against the Mean Green at Ohio near the start of the season and then backed them the next week at home against Ball St. Last week, we went against them in a smaller free play as they were favored on the road. They are 9-4 at home since the start of the 2010 season but they have gone 2-14 on the road over that stretch and going back further, they are 8-41 over their last 49 road games going back to 2006 after last week. They are now 0-3 on the road and 0-2 at home this season and I feel this is another good spot for them coming off a loss despite outgaining Tulane by 133 total yards which is a huge edge for a losing team and one that cannot be detected when just looking at the final score. Middle Tennessee St. is 3-3 on the season but it is an inflated 3-3. one of those wins came against Western Carolina so the Blue Raiders are only 2-3 against FBS teams and even that is pushing it as one of those wins came in overtime and the other came at home against Memphis by only two points. A common theme for all of those games however is the fact that Middle Tennessee St. was outgained in each and every one of those. Taking that Western Carolina game out and they are getting outgained by 136.8 ypg in those other five games. The overtime win did come on the road but they lost the other two games on the highway. Middle Tennessee St. went 8-4 last season including a win against North Texas at home by 17 points so there will be some payback against it here by the home team as well at North Texas trying to avoid a 0-2 start in its first season in C-USA. The North Texas defense allowed a season-low 227 yards against Tulane. It was the fewest yards allowed by North Texas since holding Texas Southern to 185 total yards in 2012 and it is the fewest yards allowed against an FBS team since the 2006 season. This is something that it can build upon as Middle Tennessee St. comes in with the 95th ranked total offense in the nation as well as the 91st ranked scoring offense. North Texas head coach Dan McCarney and his players left little doubt of just how important they believe their game Saturday against Middle Tennessee is to their hopes of posting the Mean Green's first winning season since 2004. The Mean Green are 4-0 ATS in their last four games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game while going 13-6 in its last 19 games following a loss. 10* (192) North Texas Mean Green

10-12-13 | Stanford v. Utah +9 | 21-27 | Win | 100 | 93 h 57 m | Show
We lost with Utah last Thursday as a last second drive to tie the game fell short. The Utes held their own though against UCLA as they were outgained by only 17 yards and while a loss like that could normally spell a letdown, with Stanford coming to town, that will not happen especially with it being homecoming weekend. Utah is now 3-2 with both losses coming in the conference by small margins and both coming at home. This marks the third straight home conference game to open the season meaning four of the last six Pac 12 games for the Utes are on the road making this one even more important. An outright win here is not out of the question based on how the Utes have played against a very tough schedule. They have played the 15th ranked slate in the nation and are just -47 yards overall against their four FBS opponents. Stanford is off to a 5-0 start and while being undefeated is what was expected, I have not been overly impressed. The Cardinal won big at Washington St., a team that has improved this season, but struggled at Army prior to that while getting outgained against Arizona St. in their game after that. Last week, they defeated Washington at home but they were dominated by the Huskies, getting outgained by 210 total yards and if not for Washington's horrible kickoff coverage, the Huskies could have walked out of there with a victory. Additionally, Washington won the first down battle 30-14. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and his coaching staff took advantage of the extra days to prepare for Saturday's game against Stanford by immersing themselves in film of the Cardinal. The offense is solid but it needs to cut down on mistakes. Quarterback Travis Wilson has thrown nine interceptions in Utah's two conference losses combined, but Whittingham said the quarterback wasn't the only one to fault for the turnovers as some of the balls have been tipped. Stanford is ranked 49th in total defense and 36th in scoring defense which are solid but not overwhelmingly great. As for the defense, they will try and get pushed around by Stanford's physical offense. The passing defense has been poor but the rushing defense has been strong as Utah is raked 37th in the nation, allowing 131.8 ypg on just 3.1 ypc. I believe the Utes can hold their own like Washington did this past Saturday. The Utes are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a loss and playing at home again should give them the edge to stay well within this number. 9* (150) Utah Utes

10-12-13 | Michigan -1.5 v. Penn State | Top | 40-43 | Loss | -115 | 98 h 48 m | Show |
Michigan got its Big Ten season off to a good start as it easily took care of Minnesota last week to improve to 5-0 overall. The Gophers looked over-matched in terms of talent, they had trouble keeping up with Michigan's skill players, the Wolverines put together five offensive touchdown drives and even recorded a defensive score. While the Wolverines will be going on the road this week, and as a favorite no less, the talent level on the other side is not that much different so on paper, they should roll once again. The problem is that these games are not played on paper but I am not overly concerned about the environment which will no doubt be tough. Michigan got a wake up call at Connecticut in its only other road game and that close call will only help it out here as any lack of focus could result in an upset. I certainly do not see that though. Penn St. has been all over the place this season as it opened with a narrow win against Syracuse, rolled over Eastern Michigan, lost to Central Florida, rolled over Kent St. and then last week, the Nittany Lions got off on the wrong foot in conference play with a somewhat surprising 44-24 loss at Indiana. It was Penn St.'s first ever loss to the Hoosiers. Indiana was 0-16 previously against the Nittany Lions so that is a story in itself right there. Last year was supposed to be a rough season for Penn St. but instead it went 8-4 and while expectations were high coming into this season, things just are not going well. The Wolverines field one of the nation's top rushing defenses. Ranked ninth nationally, Michigan has allowed just 90.4 ypg this season and overall, the Wolverines are ranked 13th in the nation in total defense, yielding only 305.0 ypg. This is bad news for Penn St. and freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg who has not been tested that much yet. The Nittany Lions have faced stop units ranked 62nd, 98th, 32nd, 111th and 104th. The Nittany Lions and Wolverines will be meeting for the first time since 2010, with Penn St. having won the last three games in the series so Michigan knows what it is going up against even though not many of the players have seen Penn St. Starting next year, Penn St. and Michigan will meet annually as Big Ten East Division rivals. To the Nittany Lions credit, they have been solid following a loss as they have rebounded their last five times by covering the spread next time out going back to last season but those games were against Kent St., Indiana, Purdue, Virginia and Navy. Look for the Wolverines to stay undefeated rather easily here. 10* (179) Michigan Wolverines

10-12-13 | Oregon v. Washington +14 | 45-24 | Loss | -110 | 91 h 55 m | Show
Washington has to be disappointed following its loss last week at Stanford as it came out on the short end of the score despite outgaining the Cardinal by 210 total yards. The kickoff coverage was the difference as the Huskies allowed Stanford to return the opening kickoff for a score and overall, allowed 211 yards on kickoff returns. They are ranked 109th in that category and will have to shore that up here. Other than that, Washington has been playing exceptional as it is ranked fifth in the country in total offense and 10th in total defense. The loss to Stanford was the first of the season but it has dominated all opponents by outgaining each of them and by an average of 270.2 ypg. Even more impressive is that it has come against the 14th toughest schedule in the nation. To no surprise, the consensus is heavily on the side of Oregon as Washington is flying under the radar and playing at home makes it that much more dangerous when getting this many points on top of that. There is not a lot of bad to say about Oregon as it has totally dominated every team that has stepped in its path. The Ducks have scored at least 55 points in every game while the defense has yet to allow 20 points. While it is no fault of their own, the schedule has been far from demanding as overall it is ranked 94th in the nation with only Oregon St. and Arizona having an easier schedule of the conference teams. That is the one negative for Oregon right now as it has been able to beat up on the mediocre teams but what happens when a team with strengths on both sides of the ball comes in? We are getting a better than expected number based on the fact Oregon is 5-0 ATS and the public will again be all over the Ducks. Anything over two touchdowns is perfect and that is what we should be getting by later in the week. If Washington's adaptation to an uptempo, spread offense has done anything, it might have given the Huskies defense a familiarity in the manner Oregon operates which is something the Ducks opponents have not had the privilege of. The Huskies could also be the one team that can keep up should the defense not be able to stop Oregon. Washington is averaging 557.0 ypg, which is on track to easily the break school record over a full season (471.9 ypg in 1991). Also, the Huskies are averaging 37.4 pg, up from 24.0 ppg last year. The Huskies have a big home field edge with their new and improved stadium which they just moved into and going back, they are 14-3 ATS in their 19 home games. 9* (164) Washington Huskies

10-12-13 | Northwestern v. Wisconsin -10 | 6-35 | Win | 100 | 90 h 24 m | Show
You have to wonder what the Northwestern mindset is going to be this week. The Wildcats played arguably the biggest home game in recent memory, left everything out on the field and came up short against Ohio St. with some very questionable calls from the referees mixed in. I think it will be extremely tough for Northwestern to bounce back from that home defeat and the matchup this week could not be worse. The Wildcats cruised through their first four games before facing the Buckeyes and while they were the home underdogs, they did not even get the cover because of a fluky play at the end of the game that gave Ohio St. a touchdown for the frontdoor cover. After four straight home games, this is the first road game for the Wildcats in over a month and it comes in a very tough environment. Wisconsin is also coming off a loss against Ohio St. but the difference is that it was in Columbus and it took place two weeks ago so the Badgers have had some extra preparation time and rest for this big game. They easily defeated Purdue in their first Big Ten game as they won 41-10 while outgaining the Boilermakers by 366 yards including 343 yards on the ground. The 10 points were the first points allowed at home this season in three games and while the first two opponents were Massachusetts and Tennessee Tech, any shutouts are good. This presents the biggest home test by a lot for Wisconsin but I expect a big edge on its side. The bye week also helped the Badgers to heal as Melvin Gordon, averaging a conference-best 139.6 rushing ypg, suffered a knee injury against Ohio St. but will play Saturday. Tight end Jacob Pedersen and receiver Kenzel Doe will also be good to go after missing time. The Badgers average a national-best 7.4 ypc on the ground and Northwestern is ranked just 44th in the nation against the run so it will again have its hands full. This is where I think the biggest edge lies for the Badgers and they have the ability to push around the much smaller defensive front of the Wildcats. On the other side, Wisconsin has to deal with the duel Northwestern quarterbacks but the extra week to prepare makes a big difference and the home field will no doubt put the defense in a better spot. They are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a bye while going 4-1 ATS in their last five games after a loss. The Wildcats are just 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game. Look for the Wildcats to show some hangover remnants from last week. 9* (168) Wisconsin Badgers

10-12-13 | New Mexico v. Wyoming -14.5 | Top | 31-38 | Loss | -115 | 100 h 60 m | Show |
Wyoming is 3-2 entering its second MWC game of the season and I feel that it is in an exceptional spot this week. We played against the Cowboys in their last game at Texas St. and they got clobbered by the Bobcats. I felt they were way overpriced following three straight wins but now it is just the opposite as they are undervalued in this one. Not only are they coming off that loss, they are coming off a bye week as well so they will be more than amped up to get on the field and take care of business. Wyoming is 16th in the nation in total offense and it is coming off its worst game of the season as it put up just 356 total yards including 64 yards rushing in that game against Texas St. That means no hold barred this week and the Cowboys should have no issues moving the ball at will. New Mexico improved to 2-3 on the season with a win over rival New Mexico St. The Lobos piled up 608 total yards in that game and they have put up 1,189 total yards over the last two games so clearly this is a team that Wyoming cannot look past. New Mexico actually leads the country in rushing offense which is no doubt a surprise but I have to put an asterisk by that as the Lobos best three games were against New Mexico St., UNLV and UTEP and those teams are ranked 123rd, 122nd and 118th in the country in rushing defense. Granted, the Lobos have helped put them in those rankings but those teams have not been good in addition to that. The Cowboys defense is not a stout unit at all but the fact it is 45th in scoring defense shows it bend don't break style. Wyoming has the biggest threat on the field in quarterback Brett Smith. He will enter the New Mexico game Saturday third in the nation in total offense averaging 384.4 ypg. And that's after his numbers dropped thanks to the Bobcats holding him to 275 yards in San Marcos. The Wyoming offense is designed to take advantage of his skills as it lines up with wide splits on the line and give Smith a variety of formations in an up-tempo attack. The Lobos might be better off working the clock, but Wyoming wants Smith to have as many touches as possible. Still, balance has been the key as Wyoming has run the ball 184 times and has tossed it 219 times. New Mexico is ranked 109th in total defense and an even worse 112th in passing efficiency defense which is a killer against this offense. The Cowboys are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games against teams with a losing record while New Mexico is 2-10 ATS in its last 12 games after scoring more than 40 points in its previous game. 10* (148) Wyoming Cowboys

10-12-13 | Pittsburgh +9 v. Virginia Tech | Top | 9-19 | Loss | -106 | 95 h 5 m | Show |
Virginia Tech came away with a win and cover last week against North Carolina and that helps us this week by going against the Hokies once again. Why? Because they were outplayed by the Tar Heels and that is not crying over spilt milk because we lost the game. North Carolina won the yardage battle by 35 yards which isn't much but that should at least put them in the hunt for a victory but a 3-0 turnover differential did them in. The Hokies remain home for another noon kickoff and as mentioned last week, early kickoffs at Lane Stadium are a huge difference compared to nighttime or even late afternoon kickoffs. Additionally, last weekend was homecoming and that could make this one even more of a lethargic atmosphere. Virginia Tech has outgained all five of six opponents but three of those came by a margin of 21 yards or fewer so it has been far from dominating and overall, it has outgained its five FBS opponents by only 20.4 ypg. Pittsburgh is coming off a bye week, following its third straight victory which came at home against Virginia. That was a defensive battle the whole way and I foresee another similar outcome here as the Panthers defense may have finally turned the corner to carry this team which was the plan at the start of the season. The Panthers escaped at Duke in their only road game of the season but they were favored there and now they are catching points and a significant amount in my opinion. Pittsburgh is 12-4-2 ATS in its last 18 games as a road underdog and it has seen this many points only twice since 2008 as it got 17 points last year at Notre Dame and narrowly lost in overtime while catching 13.5 points at USF and winning outright back in 2008. Yes times have changed but this is a very solid team that is making strides. As mentioned last week, the Hokies were playing with revenge against North Carolina and they will be doing so again here but if last week was any indication, the Hokies playing with revenge means little. Especially considering the fact that the Panthers have won three straight meetings in this series. There is good news on the injury front for Pittsburgh as quarterback Tom Savage is recovering from concussion-like symptoms and is expected to play. That is big for the passing games as in receivers Tyler Boyd (106.2 ypg) and Devin Street (111.2 ypg), Pittsburgh is one of just three teams nationally with two receivers averaging better than 100 ypg. Boyd (5.8) and Street (5.2) rank fifth and sixth in the ACC in receptions per game, the are the only duo among the league's top 10 pass-catchers. The Panthers are 14-5 ATS against teams with a winning record while the Hokies are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. 10* (115) Pittsburgh Panthers

10-10-13 | San Diego State v. Air Force +4 | Top | 27-20 | Loss | -106 | 58 h 19 m | Show |
We played on San Diego St. last Friday and admittedly got a little fortunate with the victory as the Aztecs were able to cover in overtime after blowing a 21-point, fourth quarter lead. The fact they didn't lose after doing the best they could to do so may give them some momentum heading into Thursday night but when all said and done, this is not a very strong team, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Giving up a 21-point lead at home is downright horrible and San Diego St. has now allowed 40 or more points in three of its five games on the season. Additionally, it has been outgained in four of those games with the lone yardage advantage coming against New Mexico St. which is off to a 0-6 start. After winning its opener against Colgate of the FCS, Air Force has lost its last five games and four of those have not even been close. The Falcons are coming off a loss at Navy on Saturday morning by 18 points as turnovers were the difference. They lost that battle 3-0 and it is difficult to win against any team with that sort of differential. Despite the losing streak, Air Force at least has a positive trend going as while it has been outgained in each of the last five games, the margin has gotten smaller following each game so while the wins have not been coming, the play on the field has been better. Additionally, the Falcons have played the 49th toughest schedule in the nation. The scheduling of this game is not in the favor of the Aztecs. This is the second consecutive game in which the Aztecs have had a six-day turnaround. San?Diego St. is the only team in the country this season to play consecutive games less than a week apart and this marks its third game in 13 days. Even making that more difficult is that the Aztecs now have to get ready for the triple option in a very short amount of time. To compound matters more, four of San Diego St.'s first five opponents have run pass-oriented offenses, so this marks a drastic switch for the Aztecs on a short turnaround. Air Force is ranked 11th in the nation in rushing offense and while San Diego St. is 39th in the country in rushing defense, as mentioned, it has not been tested. On the other side, Air Force has allowed opponents to put up an average of 493 ypg, and the Falcons are ranked dead last nationally in third down conversion defense. This is not a good sign against a potent San Diego St. offense but the Falcons are coming off their best game on defense and the young stop unit may finally be starting to find that needed chemistry. 10* (106) Air Force Falcons

10-10-13 | NY Giants +9 v. Chicago Bears | Top | 21-27 | Win | 100 | 31 h 19 m | Show |
The Giants incredibly horrible start to the season continued last week as they lost to the Eagles to fall to 0-5 straight up and against the number. There are problems all over the place. Quarterback Eli Manning is throwing too many picks and getting sacked too many times, the running game is non-existent and the defense has not been able to stop anyone. At some point this season, barring an incredible turnaround, this team will be unbettable and while many are thinking that now sitting at 0-5 ATS, they were still overrated but now we can finally get the chance to buy them low. Backing teams on 0-5 ATS runs may seem suicidal but in fact, it is a very strong situation as since 2007, teams that are on 0-5 ATS runs have gone 25-11 ATS (69%) in their next game. The Bears opened the season with a 3-0 record and they were the early talk of the NFL but they have dropped their last two games since then and are once again feeling the heat. They got away with a win against Cincinnati as they had to rally late and the other two wins came against Pittsburgh and Minnesota and the only reason one of those teams has a victory is because they had to play each other in London two weeks ago. Chicago is getting outgained on the season and while it isn't by much, it proves how it has been far from dominating. The favorite has come through in each of the last two Thursday night games and with the Giants sitting at 0-5, the consensus is on the chalk again this week and at a very inflated number. Since coming to Chicago, Quarterback Jay Cutler is 1-7 ATS in the second of back-to-back home games. New York has not dropped its first six games since going 0-9 back in 1976 and this is a record this team does not want to approach. It is imperative to get the running game going and while they have not been able to do it thus far, this could be the game it comes out. Brandon Jacobs will be starting the game with David Wilson out but the Bears defensive line is extremely thin with Henry Melton and Nate Collins out and Stephen Paea still hurting. The Giants defense needs to get pressure on Cutler to try and create turnovers, something Cutler is known to do. The Giants are 7-3-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a double-digit loss at home and while the nightmare season could continue, we are getting a healthy dose of points that will at least give them their first cover of the season. 10* (101) New York Giants

10-07-13 | NY Jets v. Atlanta Falcons -9.5 | Top | 30-28 | Loss | -115 | 10 h 17 m | Show |
***THIS IS NOT A PLAY ON ATLANTA ATS***
This a is two-team teaser on Atlanta and the Over. Tease the spread down as well as tease the total down. I typically do not play a lot of teasers but this one sets up well on Monday night. The Falcons are 1-3 and in desperate need of a victory as they currently trail the undefeated Saints by three and a half games plus they already have a loss to New Orleans. Atlanta has dropped its last two games at Miami and at home against New England despite outgaining both opponents. The Falcons are two games below .500 for the first time in the Matt Ryan era and mired in their first losing streak since 2009 going into Monday night so the question remains if last year was a fluke or if they are just having bad luck. I believe it is the latter. The Jets are 2-2 and while they could be sitting at 3-1, they could also be sitting at 1-3. they have outgained every opponent which is a plus but the Patriots have been the only real opponent they have seen. The Jets may have lost some confidence after being beaten up and exposed by the Titans last week and they've already lost both of their road games. Turnovers have really hurt New York as it is 29th in the NFL in scoring offense but 13th in total offense so they are moving the ball well but unable to convert. Facing a banged up Falcons defense could be the cure and while the Jets have dealt with plenty of injuries to their receivers, though they should be bolstered this week by the return of Stephen Hill from a concussion. Falcons defensive end Kroy Biermann is out for the year, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will miss at least half the season and linebacker Akeem Dent won't play either. Atlanta's offense is ranked 29th in the league in touchdown percentage from inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Last week's 30-23 loss to New England was especially troubling, as the Falcons produced only one touchdown with six red-zone possessions. In two of their three losses, Ryan had the ball inside the opponents' seven-yard line at the end of the game, with a chance to pull out a win. This I feel is what is getting us a lower than normal total and it is the lowest number that the Falcons have had all season so teasing it down more adds to the value. 10* Atlanta and the Over Two Team Tease |

10-06-13 | San Diego Chargers v. Oakland Raiders +4.5 | 17-27 | Win | 100 | 81 h 1 m | Show
This was supposed to be one of the afternoon games on Sunday but now it is the late, late game due to having to be played after the A's and Tigers game. The time change will not give either team an edge but the good news is that the NFL Network has picked the game up. The Changers are one of many surprise teams as they are 2-2 but could be sitting at 4-0 right now as they allowed the Texans to come back from a three-touchdown deficit in the season opener and then a botched defensive play allowed a late touchdown to Tennessee for the other loss. I don't think this team is all that they are being made out to be as even though the two losses were by just three points each, San Diego was outgained by 186 and 175 yards so those losses were even misleading. Oakland is 1-3 on the season but it has not been nearly as bad as people thought coming into the season. The Raiders nearly upset the Colts on the road in the season opener and then easily took care of Jacksonville which of course is not that big of a deal. They were thumped at Denver but that has been the case for every team and in the last game, they built a 14-0 lead against Washington only to get outscored 24-0 the rest of the way. Oakland was catching three and a half points in that game and now it is catching more points against a team that is inferior to the Redskins in my opinion despite what the records may be showing. The San Diego offense has been playing very well and quarterback Philip Rivers seems to be thriving in the offense as the Chargers are eighth overall and seventh in scoring. The Raiders defense has been pretty decent as well though as they are 17th in total defense and 15th in scoring defense and this is with playing Denver that has totally skewed the numbers. Offensively, Oakland will be getting Terrelle Pryor back at quarterback after missing last week and he has done very well in leading the offense. He is completing a high percentage of passes and his mobility adds an added element to the offense. The Chargers defense has been abysmal as they are 30th overall, 29th against the pass and 25th against the run. Running back Darren McFadden is questionable and while his absence will be big, it is not as big if they were playing against a top level defense. The Chargers are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games following a win while the Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a loss. 9* (432) Oakland Raiders

10-06-13 | Denver Broncos v. Dallas Cowboys +9 | 51-48 | Win | 100 | 74 h 57 m | Show
The Broncos are off to one of the best starts in the history of the NFL statistics wise as they are 4-0 and have outscored their four opponents by a total of 88 points. The 2007 Patriots outscored their first four opponents by 100 points and Denver is being talked about in that same conversation. The Patriots went on to cover their first eight games that year and while Denver is halfway to that point, the makeup is not the same. The offense is spectacular but the defense is well below average which was not the case for the Patriots in 2007. Denver has played three of its first four games at home so the schedule has been in its favor and the lone road game came against the Giants and we all know how they are doing. This will be a big test and there is no reason to think Dallas cannot pull off the upset. The Cowboys are 2-2 on the season with both of the wins coming at home and both losses taking place on the road. They are already 0-2 against the AFC West and despite getting outgained by 189 yards in San Diego last week, they were only down by two points midway through the fourth quarter and against Kansas City, they lost by just one point. Nobody is going to say the Cowboys are a legitimate Super Bowl contender at this point but the pieces are in place for them to keep improving and eventually get to that plateau. Dallas is 19th in both total offense and total defense so the numbers are very average but that is what can keep it flying under the radar. Peyton Manning is having a remarkable season as through four games, he has thrown for 1,470 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is on pace for 5,880 yards and 64 touchdowns and he has yet to throw an interception this season. Through four weeks, the Cowboys defense has done a horrible job against the pass allowing an average of 304 ypg through the air, which ranks 27th in the league. Last week against the Chargers, Philip Rivers absolutely picked apart the Cowboys defense while throwing for 401 passing yards. Now it is time to get pressure on Manning and try and create turnovers as the Dallas offense will have no problem against a below average Denver defense. Catching a touchdown at home is enormous as the Cowboys have not been this big of home underdogs since 2004 when Bill Parcels was the head coach. It shows where the public is now in favor of. Denver is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 games after scoring 30 points or more in three straight games while Dallas is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 home games after allowing 300 or more passing yards in its last game. 9* (434) Dallas Cowboys

10-06-13 | Kansas City Chiefs v. Tennessee Titans +3 | 26-17 | Loss | -105 | 71 h 33 m | Show
Kansas City is coming off another impressive win as it took care of the Giants 31-7 to improve to 4-0 on the season. Did I say impressive? Of the five remaining undefeated teams in the NFL, I consider the Chiefs to be the worst of the bunch. Their scoring differential is third best but even that is not very good considering they have played the easiest schedule in the NFL against teams that combined are 3-13. Sure, four of those losses came against Kansas City but those teams are just 3-9 in their other 12 games and that includes a head-to-head matchup. I do not believe in trap games but with the undefeated record and the situation they are walking into, this game is begging for Chiefs money and they are getting it with 76 percent of the bets coming in on the road team. Tennessee is off to a 3-1 start and could be 4-0 as the lone loss came in overtime at Houston. Granted the Titans were probably lucky to win against San Diego but they dominated that game with a 175-yard edge so it can be looked at both ways. They picked up an easy win last week against the Jets but paid the price for it as quarterback Jake Locker got hurt and will be out for a lengthy period of time which is not good for the offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over and he is not a horrible backup to have as he has plenty of experience and to his credit, he has diced up the Chiefs defense in the past so I am more than comfortable backing him here. A bigger reason for that is the fact that the titans are ranked 29th in total offense to begin with so there will not be much of a dropoff in quarterback in my opinion. The offense has not turned the ball over which has played a big role in the offense getting good scoring chances and hopefully they can keep that going. The defense is where the Titans are thriving as they are ninth overall and seventh in scoring defense and that includes giving up yards and points in overtime. The Chiefs have been solid on defense as well but again, the schedule has a lot to do with it. This is still a pedestrian team on offense as they are 17th overall and scoring is up due to excellent field possession. We play on underdogs or pickems with a turnover margin of +1 per game or better on the season, after two consecutive game where they committed no turnovers. This situation is 26-6 ATS (81.2 percent) since 1983 while Kansas City is 2-11 ATS in its last 13 road games after allowing 17 points or less in three straight games. 9* (414) Tennessee Titans

10-06-13 | New England Patriots v. Cincinnati Bengals | Top | 6-13 | Win | 100 | 74 h 43 m | Show |
We played against the Bengals last week in Cleveland and they managed only two field goals in a 17-6 loss. Part of the reason for going against them was due to their big win the previous week over Green Bay and part of the reason for playing them this week is due to the loss suffered last Sunday. Cincinnati is sitting at 2-2 and could be 3-1 as it blew a late lead against the Bears in its season opener but it is still tied atop the AFC North with the Ravens and Browns. Making this home game even more important is the fact that four of Cincinnati's next five games are on the road so protecting the home field where it is 5-1 its last six games is imperative. The Bengals offense has struggled the last two games but I believe that changes here. The Patriots improved to 4-0 with their win over Atlanta last Sunday night and while we were on the wrong side of that one, it was one of those games that could have gone either way. The Patriots were outgained, albeit slightly, by Atlanta and they have been outgained in two of their four games thus far. New England has been solid as a road underdog over the last few years but considering where this line has gone from its opening is a signal as 89 percent of the ATS wagers in this game have gone on New England but the line has gone the opposite direction. Look for the Bengals to try and establish the run to set up the passing game. With Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, stopping Cincinnati's run game will be New England's biggest challenge. In his past six games at home, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has completed 112 of 181 passes (61.9 percent) for 1,208 yards passing with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 99.0. On the other side, the Patriots are still not sure if wide receiver Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski will be active but either way, the Patriots will find it tough going on offense. The Cincinnati defense is ranked 13th in the league in total defense (334 ypg), 13th against the pass (235 ypg) and 10th against the run (99 ypg). We play against road underdogs or pickems after scoring 30 points or more last game going up against an opponent after scoring three points or less in the first half last game. This situation is 41-15 ATS (73.2 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (420) Cincinnati Bengals

10-06-13 | New Orleans Saints v. Chicago Bears +1 | Top | 26-18 | Loss | -105 | 74 h 42 m | Show |
We easily won with New Orleans on Monday night as it took care of Miami at home to improve to 4-0 on the season. While the Saints are making a move back into the elite status of the league and once again in the Super Bowl talk, this game does not set up well for them. Three of their wins have come at home while the only road victory was a tow-point win at lowly Tampa Bay and while they should have won that game by more, the fact is they didn't as playing on the road has not been easy for New Orleans. The Saints could be caught in a letdown/lookahead as coming off a primetime win over another undefeated team, they have a game at New England next week. The Saints are 0-6 ATS in their last six games in the first of back-to-back road games. Chicago suffered its first loss of the season last week in Detroit and while we were on the right side of that ticket, it did get a little too close for comfort. The Bears actually won the yardage battle but a lot of that came late as quarterback Jay Cutler finally woke up after three interceptions and trailing 40-16 but it was too little, too late. I expect a big bounceback from him and from the defense and with a game against the disappointing Giants on deck, there will be full focus this Sunday. Additionally, after playing two straight road games, a trip back home is what they need and they are 5-1 over their last six games coming off at least two straight road games. While the Saints offense gets the praise, it is the defense that has really done a remarkable job under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. They are sixth in total defense and fifth in scoring defense and while they shut down Atlanta in the opener, the last three games have not exactly been against offensive juggernauts. The Bears are third in the NFL in scoring offense and they have faced some strong defenses along the way. While the passing game is strong, Matt Forte has continued to be a big-play threat either running the ball or as a back out of the backfield and he is averaging 4.6 ypc. Surprisingly, the Chicago defense has been fairly tame as poor tackling Sunday plagued a defense that is ranked 20th with 384.0 ypg allowed and 26th with 28.5 ppg allowed. They have forced 14 turnovers which could be the key here. Chicago has an excellent situation on its side as we play on teams where the line is +3 to -3 that are coming off three or more consecutive overs while averaging 27 or more ppg. This situation is 29-8 ATS (78.4 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (426) Chicago Bears

10-05-13 | Kansas State v. Oklahoma State -14 | Top | 29-33 | Loss | -110 | 97 h 41 m | Show |
Last week was a surprise to most with Oklahoma St. going into West Virginia and losing its first game of the season. The Mountaineers were 2-2 with wins over William & Mary and Georgia St. but they were able to put together a solid gameplan and take down the Cowboys. It was a revenge game for West Virginia as it was blown out in Stillwater by 21 points last season and head coach Dana Holgorsen certainly wanted to avenge that loss against his former team where he was the offensive coordinator. The Cowboys made a ton of mistakes, including two missed field goals, two poor punts of 20 yards or less, dropped balls, inaccurate throws and three turnovers. Now it is up to the Cowboys to bounce back at home where they have lost only once in their last 14 games and that was as an underdog against Texas last season. Kansas St. is coming off a loss as well even though that was two weeks ago at Texas so it has had two weeks to prepare for this game. I am not sold on the Wildcats at all after losing so much from last season when they went 11-2 and through four games, they have already matched that los total. The two victories have come against UL-Lafayette and Massachusetts which are very unimpressive and now they face another tough road test against a team coming off an upset loss. The Cowboys running game was nonexistent last week against the Mountaineers as they managed only 111 yards on 40 carries (2.8 ypc). They came in with one of the most potent rushing attacks but never got it going but that changes here. The Wildcats, which brought only two starters back on defense, are ranked 89th in the nation in rushing defense, allowing 185.5 ypg. Additionally, they are ranked just 54th in total defense. Conversely, the Cowboys are 23rd in rushing defense and 19th in passing efficiency defense. Saturday's game marks only the second time in Oklahoma St.'s last eight games that the Cowboys will play in front of their home crowd. When the off-season is factored in, the Cowboys will have played one home game in the 325-day span between their game against Texas Tech on Nov. 17 of last year and Saturday's game. This will be a huge home edge because of that. The Cowboys are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games as a home favorite 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games off a road loss and 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game. 10* (362) Oklahoma St. Cowboys

10-05-13 | South Alabama v. Troy -3.5 | Top | 33-34 | Loss | -104 | 95 h 51 m | Show |
We won with Troy last week as the Trojans stayed within the number against Duke and now they head home following a three-game roadtrip. Troy did go 0-3 in those games but played well against Duke as it was outgained by only two yards while posting a 29-21 first down edge and before that, it lost by a touchdown at Arkansas St. but outgained the Red Wolves by 75 yards. The Trojans are 2-0 at home with an overtime win over UAB to open the season and then followed that up with a blowout victory over Savannah St. The current three-game losing streak is keeping this number down and in comparison to a year ago, the Trojans were favored by eight points on the road and are now just a three-point home favorite. While this is a play based on the situation for Troy, it is also a big play against South Alabama as it finds itself in a very tough letdown spot. The Jaguars are coming off a game at Tennessee and after falling behind 31-7 midway through the third quarter, they fought back with 17 unanswered points and had a chance to tie or win the game as they were driving but tossed a game-ending interception in the endzone on fourth down. It was a devastating loss and that was shown by the players reaction after the game so coming back from that will be difficult. There were no doubt a lot of positives to come out of that game but I believe the negative result outweighs those. Troy has only five home games all season long and it follows this up with two more road games adding even more importance to this one. The Trojans cannot afford to fall to 0-2 in the Sun Belt Conference and what better way to even the record than on homecoming. The Trojans are 96-18-1 at home under head coach Larry Blakeney and while they have been horrible of late as home favorites, only once have they been favored by a field goal or less since 2010. Troy is 117th in the nation in turnover margin as it has not been creating many but that is on our favor as it is 9-1 ATS in its last 10 games after three straight games where it forced one or less turnovers. Additionally, we play on home favorites that are allowing 440 or more ypg going up against teams allowing between 390 and 440 ypg. This situation is 53-23 ATS (69.7 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (376) Troy Trojans

10-05-13 | North Carolina +7.5 v. Virginia Tech | Top | 17-27 | Loss | -110 | 94 h 56 m | Show |
The Tar Heels are coming off their second straight loss as they lost at home against East Carolina by 24 points. It was a loss that can make or break a season as North Carolina fell to 1-3 and losing that bad at home can be fatal. After the loss, North Carolina senior running back A.J. Blue said his teammates had a "lack of focus" and "complacency." He said the Tar Heels may have looked down upon the Pirates and the Tar Heels held a players-only meeting the next day to "talk about what's going on, the things we've been noticing." That is a positive step and with everyone already writing north Carolina off, why is it getting only 7.5 points on the road after taking such a thrashing? Virginia Tech meanwhile went into Georgia Tech and pulled off the outright win last Thursday to improve to 4-1 on the season. The defense was outstanding but the offense is still a work in progress as the Hokies are 108th overall and 92nd in scoring offense while putting no more than 21 points in regulation against their four FBS opponents. Virginia Tech has outgained all five opponents but three of those came by a margin of 21 yards or fewer so it has been far from dominating. The Hokies are playing on homecoming with revenge in mind following a 14-point loss at Chapel Hill a year ago but that is not enough to give them a significant edge. We won with Virginia Tech last week but it was a touchdown underdog and playing the role of favorite has not been good as it is 6-17 ATS in its last 23 games when laying chalk. The North Carolina defense was shredded last week as it allowed 36 first downs and the Pirates ran 101 plays, the most plays ever by an opponent. The Tar Heels are now 105th in the country in total defense, 112th in rushing defense, 108th in third-down conversion defense, 103rd in first-down defense, and tied for 93rd in scoring defense. Pretty bad for sure but facing the Hokies can cure some of the issues and the Tar Heels are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game. Meanwhile, the Hokies are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. They also fall into an enormous rebound situation where we play on road underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points in conference games that are coming off a loss as a double digit home favorite. This situation is 38-9 ATS (80.9 percent) since 1992. 10* (355) North Carolina Tar Heels

10-05-13 | Eastern Michigan +14 v. Buffalo | 14-42 | Loss | -110 | 93 h 1 m | Show
We won with Buffalo last week as the Bulls easily took down Connecticut, sending the Huskies to 0-4 and leading to the firing of head coach Paul Pasqualoni. Buffalo was catching in excellent number there in my opinion and as good as that was, it is catching a horrible number this week as the line has risen by 10 points against a team that is not much different than Connecticut. Last week was the first time in four games that the Bulls outgained their opponent and while losing the yardage battle against Ohio St. and Baylor was a given, losing the yardage battle against Stony Brook was not and simply should not happen. Buffalo benefitted from four Huskies turnovers in the win as it had just one more first down and 110 more total yards. It was a much needed victory for the Bulls and while this is an improving team, they should not be laying this type of number as they have been favored at home by double-digits over a team from the FBS only once since 2009 and they are just 4-15-2 ATS in their last 21 games following an ATS win. While Buffalo had a bye prior to its game against the Huskies, Eastern Michigan enters this game coming off a bye week. It came at a great time as the Eagles have dropped their last three games including a 31-point loss against Ball St. in their most recent game. Prior to that, they lost at Rutgers but outgained the Scarlett Knights by 99 yards but poor special teams play did them in. The Eagles have won just four road games in their last 28 trips on the highway which doesn't instill a lot of confidence but they have covered half of those games which is what we are concerned about. This includes going 8-5 ATS in their last 13 MAC road games where the competition becomes more of an even playing field in most cases. Buffalo has struggled on both sides of the ball as it is ranked 111th in the country in total offense and 111th in total defense as well. As a matter of fact, the Bulls are ranked 80th or worse in all 10 offensive and defensive categories including 98th or worse in six of those. Eastern Michigan is not much better however it is ranked better than Buffalo in seven of those 10 categories and while a strength of schedule can usually play a big part in that, it is not the case here. The Bulls are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games after allowing 75 or fewer yards rushing last games while going 1-9 ATS it their last 10 home games after two straight games with a turnover margin of +1 or better. Meanwhile, the Eagles are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game. 9* (321) Eastern Michigan Eagles

10-05-13 | Maryland +16 v. Florida State | 0-63 | Loss | -110 | 93 h 60 m | Show
Two of the four remaining undefeated teams in the ACC square off early Saturday afternoon. Maryland hits the road for the second time this season and it catches Florida St. at a good time and I mean that literally as this being a noon start is in their favor as these day games down south are far from the same as they are at nighttime. The Terrapins are a perfect 4-0 and cracked the AP Poll for the first time since 2008 as they entered at No. 25. This comes after a 6-18 two-year record for head coach Randy Edsall since he took over but he finally has a healthy team to take the field. Maryland has outgained all four opponents by over a combined 900 yards and while the opposition has been weak for the most part, a 37-0 win over West Virginia looks more impressive after the Mountaineers victory last week against Oklahoma St. The Terrapins are 0-11 in Tallahassee but this is one of the best teams to make the trip and getting this size number only adds to it. The Seminoles are coming off a tougher than expected game at Boston College last Saturday as they won by two touchdowns while outgaining the Eagles by just 92 yards, both of which are season low margins. They remain eighth in the nation in both polls and have been dominant on both sides of the ball but one surprising thing is that the Seminoles have trailed in each of their four games thus far. They have been able to bounce back each time obviously but with this being arguably the biggest test of the season so far, that happening again could be trouble. They fell behind 14-0 last week and the Eagles are a one-dimensional offense that depends heavily on Andre Williams and the running game. Maryland is not. The Terrapins have more depth and more playmakers and will be an even bigger challenge for the Florida St. defense. Maryland is playing with confidence with nearly 40 ppg and the top scoring defense in the conference with the Terrapins limiting foes to 10 ppg. This is the second straight week that a team has had extra time to get ready as the Terrapins, like the Eagles, also have had two weeks to prepare for Florida St. Maryland is 7-0 ATS in its last seven road games after two consecutive covers as a favorite while Florida St. is 0-8 ATS in its last eight games after four or more consecutive straight up wins. Additionally, the Seminoles are 6-22 ATS in their last 28 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game while the Terrapins are 6-0 ATS in their last six games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. 9* (331) Maryland Terrapins

10-05-13 | Rutgers v. SMU +5 | 55-52 | Win | 100 | 93 h 59 m | Show
After opening the season with a brutal loss at Fresno St. in overtime, Rutgers has reeled off three straight wins including a come-from-behind win over Arkansas two weeks ago. The Scarlett knights trailed 24-7 but scored the final 21 points of the game to pull out the victory. Now they hit the road for the second time this season and while they are expected to win based on the line, this game will not be as easy as it looks on paper. First off, it is a tough travel spot by playing an early game in Texas and one coming against a team that has come out of the gates pretty slow. They haven't exactly brought their A games when it comes to spots like this as the Scarlet Knights are 4-9 ATS against teams with a losing record. SMU enters Saturday with a 1-3 record with the lone victory coming against Montana St. of the FCS. The Mustangs only won that game by a point and they come in with a 0-4 ATS record which is the time we like to jump on a team as value has shifted that way. Despite the record and the three losses coming by double digits, SMU is getting outgained by an average of only 19.5 ppg with the biggest discrepancy coming against Texas A&M to no surprise. It is even more impressive of not getting dominated as the Mustangs have played the third toughest schedule in the nation through the first five weeks, compared to Rutgers and its schedule strength of 155th. Playing against Texas A&M, TCU and Texas Tech, which are a combined 10-3, will do that. SMU possesses a strong passing attack that is ranked 11th in the country and will face a Rutgers passing defense that is 93rd in the nation so that is where the difference could come from. This is the AAC opener for both sides but what looks next for the Scarlett Knights could be a distraction as they have a date with seventh ranked Louisville coming up on Thursday that figures to go a long way toward deciding the conference champion. While this is their first season in the AAC, it is important to note that the Mustangs are 14-1 in league games played at Ford Stadium since the start of the 2009 season. They fall into a great situation as we play against favorites of 3.5 to 10 points that are allowing 100 or less rushing ypg, after gaining two or less rushing ypc last game. This situation is 41-15 ATS (73.2 percent) since 1992. On top of that, the Mustangs are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up loss. 9* (370) SMU Mustangs

10-05-13 | Illinois +10 v. Nebraska | Top | 19-39 | Loss | -110 | 94 h 36 m | Show |
Illinois came through with a blowout victory for us last week and while I wouldn't think that would help our cause with the line this week, it is not hurting it. The Illini rolled past Miami as they put up 601 total yards of offense and they easily could have put up more than the 50 points they scored but a win is a win and a cover is a cover. Illinois now hits the road for the first time this season although it did play a neutral site game against Washington in Chicago. Admittedly, this team has been dreadful on the road especially last season where it went 0-5 with all five of those games resulting in blowout losses. This is a new year and a new team however as the losing got contagious with nine straight losses to end last season but now things have gotten off to a much better start and the confidence level is up. Nebraska is off to a 3-1 start with this being its fifth straight home game to open the season. The Huskers are coming off a bye week as well so the added preparation time is in their favor but it may not even matter here. Illinois showed a lot of balance against the RedHawks and it will test a Nebraska defense that has struggled against the run and with the spread. Nebraska struggled against Wyoming to open the season and after getting past a bad Southern Mississippi team, it got torched by UCLA before rebounding against South Dakota St. of the FCS. One situation that I like is double-digit underdogs with potent offenses facing bad defenses as the backdoor is always open. The days if the "Blackshirts" in Nebraska are long gone as the huskers ranked 107th in the nation in total defense, 86th in rushing defense, 105th in passing defense and 75th in scoring defense. And this is against the 121st ranked schedule in the nation so expect things to get worse before they get better. The Illini come in with the 35th ranked total offense and 25th ranked scoring offense so they will be moving the ball and scoring points. It will be up to their defense to slow down the Nebraska offense just enough to be able to keep up and that should be no issue. They fall into a great situation where we play on road underdogs that are averaging 450 or more ypg, after gaining 7.25 or more yppl in their previous game. This situation is 33-6 ATS (84.6 percent) over the last five seasons. Additionally, Nebraska is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 home games after a win by 28 or more points. 10* (339) Illinois Fighting Illini

10-04-13 | Nevada v. San Diego State -4.5 | Top | 44-51 | Win | 100 | 58 h 47 m | Show |
It has been a very tough start for San Diego St. as it opened the season at 0-3 and it was looking at 0-4 right in the face after trailing New Mexico St. 16-5 at halftime last week. The Aztecs responded with a 21-0 second half against the Aggies to grab their first win of the season and I believe that second half is going to jump start this team that was expected to make some noise in the MWC this season. The good news is that the first four games were all nonconference contests so they begin conference action now and sitting at 0-0, it is a brand new season. We played on San Diego St. in its last game before New Mexico St. and it was able to cover at home against Oregon St. despite losing. San Diego St. has yet to get a victory at home this season and with this game on national television, this is the perfect opportunity for that to finally happen. Friday marks San Diego St.'s first regular-season home game to be shown on ESPN?since Nov. 27, 1999 so this is a big deal. Nevada is 3-2 with all three wins coming at home and both losses taking place on the road. Those two losses were at UCLA and Florida St. so we can put an asterisk next to those games but until they can prove they can win on the road, the Wolf Pack will be a fade after two horrible showings. The Wolf Pack have won two straight games but both of those were at home and they almost blew it last week against Air Force while prior to that, they defeated Hawaii but were outgained by 36 total yards. The offense came to life last week as they gained more than 353 total yards over an FBS team for the first time. The return of quarterback Cody Fajardo last week was a big one so the Aztecs will have its hands full on defense. Aztecs running back Donnel Pumphrey is coming off a career game against New Mexico St. by rushing for 167 yards and three touchdowns. After what Air Force did to the Wolf Pack defense, this might be a key concern for the front seven. Nevada allowed Air Force to average 7.4 ypc, and many of these were running plays the gashed right up the middle of the Wolf Pack's defense. The defense has struggled to contain the run all season as it has allowed at least 345 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in three of its five games this season. We play against underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points that are coming off two straight conference wins going up against an opponent off a double digit road win. This situation is 36-10 ATS (78.3 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (312) San Diego St. Aztecs

10-03-13 | UCLA v. Utah +6 | Top | 34-27 | Loss | -115 | 36 h 8 m | Show |
We have seen this line go up already from opening and it will likely be on the rise more once the public gets involved on Thursday more toward gametime. UCLA has gotten off to a strong start at 3-0 and it is outgaining foes by an average of 275.3. ypg which is certainly a dominating margin. But I am not sure if this team is for real or if the Bruins are dominating due to playing a soft early schedule. Wins over Nevada and New Mexico St. are far from impressive and while the win over Nebraska looks good on paper, the Huskers are a question mark as well. UCLA was actually down by 11 points at halftime before outscoring Nebraska 31-0 in the second half so it caught fire while the Huskers basically sat down. Utah comes in 3-1 with the only loss coming in overtime against Oregon St. which turned into a shootout. The Utes own quality wins over Utah St. at home and BYU on the road and this is not a team to be taken lightly after a disappointing 5-7 season a year ago. The offense has been the key as after the Utes didn't hit 500 yards of total offense in any game in 2012, they are averaging 504.8 ypg through four games thus far. the main reason has been the emergence of quarterback Travis Wilson as he has thrown for over 1,100 yards while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and has a 166.6 quarterback rating. Additionally, he is also this team's second-leading rusher with 251 yards on 32 carries (7.8 ypc). UCLA is second in the nation in total offense, yes ahead of Oregon, averaging a whopping 614.3 ypg. The Bruins are also third in scoring offense, putting up an average of 52.7 ppg and while this team may look unstoppable, a good defense can slow them down. The Bruins have played defenses ranked 113th, 107th and 123rd and while the season is young making it a small sample size and UCLA has contributed to those rankings, the other games played by those stop units have not been very good. Utah is ranked 74th in total defense and while that is below average, it is the best UCLA has seen. One of the places the Utes improved against BYU was in the secondary, which came up with an interception and helped force 30 incompletions. Slowing down UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley will be important as his numbers rival those of Wilson's. UCLA is 8-25 ATS in its last 33 road games after two or more consecutive straight up wins while Utah is 11-2 ATS in its last 13 home games coming off a win as an underdog. 10* (308) Utah Utes

10-03-13 | Buffalo Bills v. Cleveland Browns -4 | Top | 24-37 | Win | 100 | 31 h 57 m | Show |
Two surprising teams square off on Thursday as the Bills and Browns both come into this game with a 2-2 record following big wins over playoff teams. Buffalo has adjusted well to the new coaching staff and schemes but while the two losses have been by a combined nine points, the two victories have been by just four points so feasibly, this team could be sitting at 1-3 or even 0-4 based on a couple plays. Both wins have come at home with a loss coming in their only road and hitting the highway has not been a good thing for the Bills as they are 2-14 over their last 16 road games. Playing on a short week after facing the defending Super Bowl champions does not help and even though we saw the 49ers win on the road last week, the home team has a significant edge on Thursday night games. Cleveland has won two straight games to get back to .500 and it has been the more dominating of the two teams. The Browns have outgained three of four opponents while getting outgained by Baltimore by just 37 yards. Overall, they are +32.3 in yardage margin, compared to the bills which are -49.7 ypg in margin. Playing at home on a short week only helps as does the fact Cleveland will be out for some revenge after losing here 53 weeks ago against Buffalo. A win would put the Browns over. 500 for the first time since the third game of the 2011 season and they have not won three of their first five games in 12 seasons. This is their only primetime game this season so they will be out making the most of it. While Brian Hoyer has gotten most of the publicity for the Browns, and it is well deserved, it is the defense that is making the difference. On Sunday, the Browns held the Bengals to just two field goals and 63 rushing yards in a 17-6 win. The previous week, the Browns limited Adrian Peterson to 88 yards and forced three key turnovers in a 31-27 victory. Overall, they have held three of four opponents to season lows in yardage. And the rushing defense has been as it best as through four games, the Browns are allowing just 2.9 ypc which is lowest in the NFL and they are the only defense not to give up a run of 15 yards or longer. Cleveland is capable of forcing opponents into a one-dimensional game plan that is difficult to sustain against a defense that is stout at the point of attack and explosive on the edges. Consequently, the Browns rank third in the NFL in total defense and eighth in points allowed. Buffalo is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games road after playing a game at home, losing those games by an average 17.5 ppg. Cleveland meanwhile is 6-1 ATS in its last seven home games coming off a win against a divisional opponent as an underdog. 10* (302) Cleveland Browns

09-30-13 | Miami Dolphins v. New Orleans Saints -7 | Top | 17-38 | Win | 102 | 13 h 39 m | Show |
Seven teams were sitting at 3-0 heading into the weekend and two square off on Monday night as the Dolphins and Saints look to remain undefeated. Miami is the bigger surprise at 3-0 even though expectations were risen after it spent a ton of money in the offseason. Still, being undefeated is a shock to some considering the first two wins came on the road followed up by a win over the Falcons last week. Personally I am not sold on this team quite yet despite being eighth in the NFL in scoring defense and 11th in scoring offense. Why? Miami is just 22nd in total defense and 26th in total offense and it has been outgained in each of its three games. This includes being outrushed in all three games and being outpassed in two of those so the Dolphins can be considered the worst of the undefeated teams with the Bears close by. And the Bears are no longer in that group after Sunday. The fact that New Orleans is undefeated is not really a surprise despite it having a poor season a year ago. The absence of head coach Sean Payton was a huge part of it but with him being back and a new defense that has improved immensely, the Saints are looking to rise back into the elite category of the NFL. The schedule has been pretty tame with the Cardinals and Buccaneers being the last two victories and while the win over Atlanta is not looking as good as once thought, it is still a very good start. New Orleans is middle of the pack in scoring offense as some costly turnovers have taken place at the wrong time. The Saints are sixth in total offense and most of that production has taken place at home where they have been dominant once again. The defense has been the surprise though as they are fourth overall and fifth in scoring. Pressuring the quarterback has been paying off and will do so once again here as the Dolphins offensive line is in shambles. While New Orleans has only sacked opposing quarterbacks eight times, the Saints have hit them 11 times and hurried them another 39 times. As brought up in the Seattle analysis from Sunday, the fact that Miami is 3-0 against the number this season actually brings up an interesting contrarian angle. Since 2004, 32 teams have opened the season a perfect 3-0 ATS but rarely do they make it to 4-0 ATS as those teams have gone a combined 11-21 ATS (34.4 percent) in that fourth game. The Saints have won their last eight Monday Night Football games and have won 10 consecutive primetime home matchups. In those ten games, the Saints have outscored their opponents 356-176. New Orleans is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 games as a home favorite of 7 points or less. 10* (226) New Orleans Saints

09-29-13 | New England Patriots v. Atlanta Falcons -1 | Top | 30-23 | Loss | -120 | 81 h 6 m | Show |
It is no surprise that the Patriots are off to a 3-0 start or is it? This is actually the first time since 2007 that they have started off the season 3-0 and that was the year they went 18-0 before losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. That team won its first three games by 79 points combined while the 2013 New England team has won its first three games by just 25 points combined and two of the wins have been by two and three points. Now things will be a lot tougher and we are clearly seeing that in the number as the Patriots go from being favorites by more than a touchdown in each of their first three games to being an underdog this week. A slight underdog but an underdog nonetheless. The Falcons came close to making it to the Super Bowl last season but just fell short so expectations are very high this season. Things have not started according to plan as Atlanta is just 1-2 but the schedule has not been in its favor as the Falcons have played the seventh toughest schedule and the Patriots will be the third team so far on the slate that is off to a 3-0 start. The two losses to the other two undefeated teams could have gone either way so feasibly they could be sitting at 3-0 right now. That makes this game that much bigger as getting off to a 1-3 start will make things difficult to even think about winning the division let alone grabbing the home field edge in the playoffs even though it is still very early. The Patriots meanwhile have played the easiest schedule in the league so far and this will be just their second road game of the year after opening in Buffalo. The Patriots offense has been average at best and it is the running game that has been the catalyst as quarterback Tom Brady is still getting used to his new receiving corps. It will be key for the Falcons to slow down the running game and all indications say they will as through three games, Atlanta's defense is holding opponents to 79.0 ypg and 3.8 ypc, which puts the Falcons back in the top 10 in terms of run defense. On the other side, the explosive Falcons offense will be facing a tough New England defense but playing at home will be a big advantage there. The Falcons fall into a tremendous league-wide situation as we play against road teams where the line is +3 to -3 after allowing six points or less last game going up against an opponent after a loss by six or less points. This situation is 31-8 ATS (79.5 percent) since 1983. 10* (224) Atlanta Falcons

09-29-13 | Cincinnati Bengals v. Cleveland Browns +5 | 6-17 | Win | 100 | 73 h 21 m | Show
The Browns picked up their first win of the season last week at Minnesota and they should be able to carry that over into this one. Despite being 1-2 overall, Cleveland has outgained its opponents by 59 total yards and the one game that is did not outgain its opponent, in Baltimore, it was right there and trailed by just one points midway through the fourth quarter. The victory last week came as a surprise to most as it was right after the Browns traded away Trent Richardson signaling what many considered tossing in the towel for the season already. With Pittsburgh sitting at 0-3 and Baltimore on the road this week, a win by the Browns could possibly put them into a tie for first place by the end of the weekend. This is the first of three straight home games so expect a big effort in getting the homestand started the right way. The Bengals opened the season with a tough loss at Chicago as they blew an 11-point lead against the Bears but have bounced back with two wins. Those wins were big ones as they defeated their rivals the Steelers and then last week took care of Green Bay after falling behind by 16 points and scoring the final 20 points of the game. It can be considered a misleading final score as Cincinnati was outgained by 102 total yards but benefitted from taking advantage of turnovers including scoring on a fumble return for the winning score. Now the Bengals go from a home underdog to a road favorite which is a big swing and considering the extent of two recent victories, it sets up a huge letdown spot despite the Browns being a rival. On top of that, Cincinnati hosts New England next week. he Cleveland offense put up its best showing last week in Minnesota as it tallied 409 yards of offense while scoring 31 points. Quarterback Brian Hoyer had a solid game despite three picks and he looks to carry that over in his first start at home. He has a weapon back as well. Josh Gordon came back from a two-game suspension to hit Minnesota with 168 yards from scrimmage, 146 on 10 receptions, 22 on a run. After allowing the Dolphins and Ravens to rush for only 119 yards in the first two weeks, the Browns held the reigning NFL MVP, Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson, to 88 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. Overall, the Browns are seventh in rushing defense and an even more impressive second in carry average as they are allowing just 2.8 ypc. We play against teams coming off an upset win as a home underdog, with a winning record on the season. This situation is 143-77 ATS (65 percent) since 1983. 9* (204) Cleveland Browns

09-29-13 | Seattle Seahawks v. Houston Texans +3 | 23-20 | Push | 0 | 73 h 17 m | Show
Seattle is off to a 3-0 start both straight up and against the spread and after two convincing home wins, it has taken over the spot as the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl as it is now less than a 2-1 favorite. The Seahawks have won their last two games by a combined 54 points but those games were at home where they have now won 10 straight games. They are a different team on the road however as they were a fumble away from possibly losing at Carolina in their season opener and going back, they are 4-7 in their last 11 true road games not counting the game played in Toronto against the Bills. Under head coach Pete Carroll, Seattle is 19-7 at home and 8-16 on the road and over that stretch it is 1-4 ATS as a road favorite (again not counting the Buffalo game). Houston is coming off a loss at Baltimore last week as the Texans fell to 2-1 on the season. They allowed a defensive touchdown and a special teams touchdown so while they lost by 21 points, it was a deceiving final as they actually outgained the Ravens by 28 yards. There are many that are down on this team right now as they were fortunate to win their first two games as they had to come back from a big deficit against San Diego and then were taken to overtime before winning against the Titans. The thing is however that Houston outgained those first two opponents by 186 yards and 204 yards so again we are seeing deceiving final scores. The Texans are now 0-3 ATS which is the exact opposite of the Seahawks and that is surely another reason they come in as home underdogs. Speaking of which, Houston has been a home underdog only once since 2011 (not counting the season finale in 2011 which it covered anyway) and it took care of Atlanta outright. Seattle has the top ranked defense in the NFL and everyone knows about it. The Texans meanwhile are getting a bad rap for their defense being soft yet they are ranked second in the NFL in total defense so there is not a big difference with the exception of turnover as Houston has gotten just one takeaway through three games. The fact that Seattle is 3-0 against the number this season actually brings up an interesting contrarian angle. Since 2004, 32 teams have opened the season a perfect 3-0 ATS but rarely do they make it to 4-0 ATS as those teams have gone a combined 11-21 ATS (34.4 percent) in that fourth game. That is pretty significant. Seattle is 3-18 ATS in its last 21 games coming off a home win by 21 points while the Texans are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 home games against teams with a winning road record. 9* (208) Houston Texans

09-29-13 | NY Giants +4.5 v. Kansas City Chiefs | 7-31 | Loss | -105 | 73 h 15 m | Show
What is wrong with the Giants? They won the Super Bowl two years ago but missed the playoffs last season and now they are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the fourth time in five years after a 0-3 start. Starting 0-4 and we can stick a fork in them but a 1-3 start is not as bad as it sounds considering how weak the NFC East is this season. If ever there is a must win game in Week Four of the NFL season, this is it. Last week was an absolute nightmare as the Giants as the game was over before it really started as quarterback Eli Manning was sacked six times in the first nine plays of the game. That is unbelievable and things will not be any easier here but you have to think that New York will come in with full focus this week after all of the heat it has taken this past week. While it never should used as an excuse, the fact that Tom Coughlin lost his brother last week did not help matters as it must have been extremely difficult in putting a gameplan together in the wake of that. While the Giants are off to a surprising 0-3 start, the Chiefs are off to a surprising 3-0 start. Winning at Jacksonville was expected and Kansas City dominated that game and while wins against Dallas and Philadelphia were very solid ones, the Chiefs were outgained in both of those contests. So what has been the difference? Turnovers. Kansas City has created nine turnovers on defense while the offense has yet to turn it over. That is pretty amazing considering the Chiefs were dead last in the AFC in turnover margin last year at -24 and through three games they were -8 in turnover margin so it is nearly a complete opposite of 2012 right now. Turnover are contagious and can be the biggest turnaround difference but this rate will not last. Conversely, the Giants are -9 in turnover margin and their 13 giveaways are easily the most in the NFL. The Giants remain confident but history is not on their side. Only three 0-3 teams (out of 115) have made the playoffs since 1990, and only one 0-4 team has done so. While they may be saying the right things, they know what is at stake. Back in 2007, they started 0-2 and won a must win game at Dallas to spark a huge turnaround to the season and one that would eventually result in a Super Bowl Championship. Not many will going that far on a limb to say a repeat of that will happen but New York is more than capable of putting together run with the veteran players it has. Kansas City is receiving a huge majority of the betting action here yet the line has moved the other way slightly. That is a take sign as well. 9* (213) New York Giants

09-29-13 | Indianapolis Colts v. Jacksonville Jaguars +9 | Top | 37-3 | Loss | -110 | 74 h 9 m | Show |
We lost with the Jaguars last week in Seattle but I am not afraid to jump back on them here this week in what is a great spot for them as well as a horrible spot for the Colts. Jacksonville is the worst team in the league and while it is one of six teams at 0-3, it is pretty clear which team is at the bottom. The Jaguars are -64 in point differential but the worse and worse they look, the better they become at the betting markets as this line has now hit nine points in some places and while that is mostly for teaser protection, it is a great number to be on. In composition, when the Colts played here last season, they were favored by three points with Jacksonville coming off five straight losses so what has really changed since then? Indianapolis is coming off a monster win at San Francisco last week to move to 2-1 on the season as it was able to bounce back from its home loss against Miami the previous week. The Colts now hit the road again before heading back home next week to take on Seattle so this is the classic example of a letdown/lookahead situation even though this is a divisional game. While we have already touched on the value of this line from a Jacksonville perspective, we can look at the value going against the Colts as they are making an incredible 20-point in the spread from last week and that is usually unheard of in the NFL. Still, it comes as no surprise that 82 percent of the action is on the Colts yet the line has not budged in most places. Clearly the Colts are the better team in this matchup but as we all know, the better teams do not always win in this league. Winning against the spread in the NFL usually means winning ugly and that is the case here. Indianapolis can escape with a victory and that is just fine as we do not need the Jaguars outright anyway. We have three solid angles that favor the Jaguars. First, we play against teams after a win by 14 or more points going up against an opponent after two straight losses by 10 or more points. This situation is 31-9 ATS (77.5 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Second, we play on home underdogs or pickems that are averaging 17 or fewer ppg, after allowing 40 points or more last game. This situation is 48-19 ATS (71.6 percent) since 1983. Third, we play on underdogs or pickems that are averaging 14 or fewer ppg, after a loss by 28 or more points. This situation is 56-24 ATS (70 percent) since 1983. 10* (206) Jacksonville Jaguars

09-29-13 | Chicago Bears v. Detroit Lions -3 | Top | 32-40 | Win | 102 | 74 h 52 m | Show |
Chicago is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2010 before it lost in Week Four in its second road game of the season and I am seeing a repeat of that here. The Bears are lucky to be undefeated right now. They rallied from an 11-point deficit against the Bengals in their season opener and then the next week against the Vikings, they waited until the final seconds to stage the rally as they scored the game-winning touchdown with 10 seconds remaining. The Bears have become the hunted now and will have a tough tine in looking for their first 4-0 start in seven years. Detroit can grab a share of the early division lead Sunday after earning its first-ever win at Washington last week, 27-20. that pushed Detroit to 2-1 on the season and made up for a tough loss at Arizona the previous week and now the Lions head back home in search of their first two-game winning streak since the middle part of last season. 2012 was a nightmare as after making the playoffs the previous year, Detroit fell to 4-12 last season but were certainly one of the better 4-12 teams in recent memory considering the Lions outgained their opponents in 11 of those 16 games. The issue was turnovers as Detroit had only one game where the offense did not commit one while the defense had six games of not taking one away. Five more games resulted in just one takeaway and overall it was -16 in turnover differential with only the Eagles and Chiefs being worse. That is why this year's version is considered a sleeper by many to make a playoff run. This is a very big game as it is the only home game in a five-game stretch including a game at Green Bay next week. The Chicago defense has been very opportunistic even it has not been very dominating overall. The Bears are tied for 19th in scoring defense at 24.7 ppg and are ranked 25th in total defense at 383.0 ypg but they've scored three defensive touchdowns in the last two games while recovering six fumbles and intercepting five passes. Last week was a prime example of how turnovers can make the difference in the game as Chicago won the turnover battle against the Steelers 5-0. The Bears won by 17 points but were outgained by 201 total yards and they are the lone undefeated team in the NFL that is actually getting outgained on the season. The Bears are 4-18 ATS in their last 22 games after scoring 25 points or more in two straight games while going 0-8-1 ATS in their last nine games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game. 10* (212) Detroit Lions

09-28-13 | Tulane +13 v. Louisiana Monroe | Top | 31-14 | Win | 100 | 103 h 57 m | Show |
Tulane was expected to have a much better season this year than it has had over the last couple years and was even being talked about in making its first bowl game since 2002. While that is still a long way off, the Green Wave are off to a 2-2 start and those two victories have already matched their win totals from both 2012 and 2011 so they are headed in the right direction. Last week, the Green Wave lost at Syracuse but despite the blowout on the scoreboard, it was a misleading final score as Tulane was outgained by just 75 total yards as a 2-0 turnover differential s well as having two punts blocked were the difference as that led to 28 points for the Orange. Prior to the 35-point loss at Syracuse, the last five Tulane losses going back to last season were by five points or fewer so things have definitely tightened up. Meanwhile, UL-Monroe got blasted at Baylor by 63 points and that was not a misleading final score as the Warhawks were completely dominated, getting outgained by 486 total yards. And that was before the Bears let off the gas in the fourth quarter so it could have been even worse. That is going to be a tough loss to come back from in my opinion and even though UL-Monroe did bounce back from its only other loss, a 34-0 setback against Oklahoma, the situation is different here. Add to the fact the Warhawks open SBC play next week on Thursday gives us even more confidence that this one will not be focused on fully. One of the biggest areas Tulane was expected to improve in was the defense and we have seen it thus far. The Green Wave have allowed close to 10 ppg fewer and over 100 ypg fewer than it did last season so progress is certainly being made. The offense also needed a boost and while the numbers are not great, they are up from last season including scoring where Tulane is averaging more than a touchdown more than it did last season. JUCO transfer Nick Montana is picking up the offense nicely and considering he originally signed with Washington, the potential is definitely there. The Warhawks are struggling both offensively and defensively and while playing a tougher schedule has played into that, I do not like the spot they are in at all. Tulane comes in looking for some payback following its 53-point loss against the Warhawks almost a year to the day. It was easily their worst loss of the season and that brings in more than 100 percent effort here. Tulane is a perfect 5-0 ATS as a double-digit underdog in the second of consecutive road games while the Warhawks are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a loss of more than 20 points. Additionally, we play on teams after allowing 42 points or more last game going up against an opponent after a loss by 28 or more points. This situation is 60-25 ATS (70.6 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (165) Tulane Green Wave

09-28-13 | Wyoming v. Texas State Bobcats +11.5 | Top | 21-42 | Win | 100 | 101 h 53 m | Show |
I played against Wyoming last week and we got burned by the Cowboys as they improved to a perfect 4-0 ATS and are now becoming a public darling early in the season. That means inflated lines and a team we can sell off high right now which I firmly believe is the case here. I felt we were getting value with Air Force last week but we are getting significant value this week. The 3-1 start by Wyoming is a surprise to some after a 4-8 season a year ago but this is definitely a solid team and the start is not a fluke. But asking the Cowboys to lay this many points on the road is an issue considering they have not been double-digit road favorites since October of 1999 and no that is not a typo. Texas St. is in its third year in the FBS and it has been a decent transition as it is 12-15 overall including 2-1 this season. Granted the victories have not been against the best of opposition but this is definitely a team that no one should be sleeping on. Head coach Dennis Franchione is a proven winner and with 15 starters back from last season, this team could make some noise in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats are coming off a loss last week at Texas Tech and while they gave up a lot of offense, they allowed only two offensive touchdowns against one of the most prolific offenses in the country as they held the Red Raiders to four field goals. Overall, the scoring defense is tied for 26th in the country so slowing down the potent Wyoming offense can definitely be done. Texas Sta. is ranked third nationally and leads the Sun Belt Conference in turnover margin with an average margin of 2.78 per game and that alone can be a difference maker. The Bobcats registered three interceptions against Texas Tech last week. Additionally, Texas St.'s defense is ranked eighth nationally and leads the Sun Belt Conference in red-zone defense with a percentage of .571 through its first three games. Getting pressure on Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith will be a key factor here and the Bobcats should be able to do that. Dating back to the season finale last year against New Mexico St., they have had 12 quarterback sacks in their last four games. The Bobcats have seen all three of their games stay under the total and that is to our advantage as lower scoring games usually tend to favor the underdog which has been the case both times for Texas St. and especially when it involves a double-digit underdog. Texas St. has covered five of its last six games at home and that includes two closer than expected games against Nevada and Louisiana Tech last season. The Cowboys meanwhile are 1-5 in their last six games against teams with a winning record while going 9-24 ATS in their last 33 games after having won three out of their last four games. 10* (180) Texas St. Bobcats

09-28-13 | Connecticut v. Buffalo | 12-41 | Win | 100 | 94 h 11 m | Show
This line has already made a move the other way but it is pretty insignificant if you ask me. The Huskies opened as road favorites until it became pretty clear that was the wrong side to be laying chalk. As of Tuesday, the Bulls are a slight favorite so a win likely means a cover and definitely not a cover loss and while catching point would have been nice, I do not think it even comes into play. We are catching a great price with Buffalo based on recent results and while they are not necessarily skewed results, they are playing a big factor. Buffalo got rolled at Baylor three weeks ago but that was no surprise as the Bears look to be the real deal. They Bulls then struggled at home against Stony Brook as it took overtime to win but that was a clear overlook on their part. Additionally, their best player was out of the lineup as running back Brandon Oliver missed the game with an injury but now he is healthy after having that week off as well as the recent bye week. Those two games are making people stay off Buffalo but this team is better that what was shown on the field. Conversely, Connecticut come in following a tough home loss against Michigan as it led by 14 points in the third quarter and took a touchdown lead into the fourth quarter before Michigan kicked the game winning field goal. The Huskies got the ball back and made it to the Michigan 41 yard line but turned it over on downs. That is the type of loss that can kill a season even if it is only three games old. The Huskies fell to 0-3 with the defeat and while a loss against Maryland was expected, a loss to open the season against Towson was not. They lost to the tigers by 15 points while getting outgained by 103 yards. Making the 0-3 start even tougher to swallow is that all three of those games took place at home making this the first road game of the season for Connecticut. While Connecticut has not made it to a bowl game each of the last two seasons, this is probably the best spot for Buffalo to break out of its losing skid to the Huskies. The Bulls have dropped eight straight meetings including the four that have taken place over the last four years. I played on the Bulls last season in this game and they won as underdogs as they were coming off a bye week in that game also and even though it is early, the bye this year came at a great time as it is Connecticut that could use it right now. We play on home favorites that are allowing 440 or more ypg going up against teams allowing between 390 and 440 ypg. This situation is 53-23 ATS (69.7 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 9* (118) Buffalo Bulls

09-28-13 | Iowa -1 v. Minnesota | 23-7 | Win | 100 | 94 h 10 m | Show
This is the first time we have been involved in an Iowa game this season and I think it is the perfect opportunity to jump on the Hawkeyes. After opening the season with a loss against Northern Illinois, Iowa has won three straight games and while the opposition was nothing to write home about, it is a great thing for confidence after losing that tough opener against the Huskies. The Hawkeyes have won the yardage battle in each game this year and overall, they are outgaining opponents by an average of 152 ypg. After taking the last couple years off, the defense has been the strength thanks to eight starters returning. Iowa is ranked 19th in the country in total defense including 12th in rushing defense and 23rd in passing efficiency defense. The Hawkeyes are allowing just 17 ppg on the season. Minnesota comes into this game with a 4-0 record and despite the better start, it does not mean it is a better team. Taking one look at the schedule will tell you that as the Gophers have yet to face a team from a BCS conference and despite that, they are outgaining foes by just 15 ypg and have actually been outgained twice. Minnesota has opened 4-0 three times since 2005 only to go on to lose the fifth game including last season when it had a similar easy nonconference schedule and then went to Iowa and got hammered by 18 points. This team is improving behind head coach Jerry Kill but I am not sold on the Gophers just yet especially when it is Iowa that is the stronger team making the bigger strides. In his first career start, Minnesota redshirt freshman quarterback Mitch Leidner put on a performance that earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors as he rushed 24 times for 151 yards and four touchdowns against San Jose St. Minnesota leads the nation with redzone rushing touchdowns with 14. Eight of those runs, which includes five from last week, have been one-yard touchdowns. Things will be a lot different this time around as he will be facing a tougher defense. Iowa is 17-3 ATS in its last 20 games against teams rushing for 230 or more ypg while going 12-2 ATS in its last 14 games against teams averaging 37 or more ppg. The Gophers meanwhile are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game and 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 home games against teams with a winning road record. Additionally, Iowa falls into a solid situation as we play on road teams that are averaging 35 or more ppg, after allowing seven points or less in the first half in two straight games. This situation is 58-26 ATS (69 percent) over the last five seasons. 9* (137) Iowa Hawkeyes

09-28-13 | Troy +10.5 v. Duke | 31-38 | Win | 100 | 94 h 43 m | Show
Duke is coming off a very tough loss at home last weekend against Pittsburgh as it dropped a 58-55 shootout against the Panthers. The toughest part is that the Blue Devils came back from a 20-point deficit to pull within two points, fell back down against by 23 points only to pull back within three points but were unable to get the ball back as the Panthers ran out the clock. It was Duke's second straight loss following two consecutive wins to open the season and it was also the second straight game that Duke was outgained following winning the yardage battle the first two games. While the offense managed 532 yards and 55 points, it is not very encouraging that the defense has gotten worse as each game has gone along. Troy also comes into this game with a 2-2 record and it was set up similar to Duke as the Trojans won their first two games only to go on and drop their last two contests. They lost a tough one at Arkansas St. two weeks ago as they outgained the Red Wolves but lost the turnover battle 4-0. Last week was a disaster as it looked as though they never got over that setback as they went to Mississippi St. and lost by 44 points while getting outgained 551-186. Troy was down by just three points after the first quarter but the Bulldogs went on to score the final 52 points of the game. This will be the third straight road game for Troy which is never ideal but I believe that is being taken into consideration in this line as a lot of power ratings have these two teams on a pretty level playing field and the Duke home field edge is far from a strong one. Troy has been know for a strong offense over the last few years but it is ranked just 50th overall and 48th in scoring but a lot of that can be attributed to the game last week as the only score came in the first quarter. Duke will not be as tough this week as the Blue Devils are 73rd in scoring defense which includes the shutout against North Carolina Central. Duke has been pretty solid the last couple years as a home favorite but it is very rare to see the Blue Devils as double-digit favorites. The Trojans 4-0 ATS in their last four games after accumulating less than 275 total yards in their previous game while going 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games after two straight games where they forced one or fewer turnovers. Troy also falls into a great situation as we play on underdogs of 10.5 to 21 points after failing to cover the spread in three out of their last four games against opponent after covering the spread in two out of their last three games. This situation is 202-121 ATS (62.5 percent) since 1992. 9* (115) Troy Trojans

09-28-13 | Akron v. Bowling Green -15 | Top | 14-31 | Win | 100 | 100 h 51 m | Show |
Bowling Green opened the season with a pair of lopsided wins against Tulsa and Kent St. before taking its own thumping when it travelled to Indiana. The Falcons bounced back with a win against Murray St. of the FCS this past week as they won by 41 points while outgaining the Racers by 348 total yards. They return to MAC action this weekend but I do not believe the level of opposition rises too much here despite what we have seen the last couple weeks. Bowling Green is already 1-0 in the MAC and with a game against Massachusetts next week, there will be no looking past Akron this week especially considering the two tight games the Zips have been a part of. Akron lost to UCF to open the season and then went on to defeat James Madison at home despite getting outgained by 142 total yards. Facing Michigan in their next game was supposed to be a blowout but the Zips nearly pulled off the unthinkable upset as more than five-touchdown underdogs and instead of not letting that game go, they nearly won against last week but lost by five points at home against Louisiana. Now they open MAC play at one of the East Division favorites and coming off two tough losses, I just do not see how Akron will be able to hang around in this game. The Zips have been struggling for a while now as they are 4-36 over their last 40 games dating back to the start of the 2010 season and three of those wins came against teams from the FCS. The lone victory against an FBS team came in 2010 at home against Buffalo which went on to finish 2-10 that year so Akron has been completely outclassed by the better teams. The defense has been a big issue for Akron as they have allowed at least 35 ppg in those past three seasons and this season it is better but not by much, allowing 33.5 ppg which is 99th in the nation. Bowling Green is 19th in the country in total offense and should have no issues marching up and down the field here. Time of possession is heavily in the Falcons favor as well as they are ranked third in the nation while Akron comes in ranked 103rd, with close to 10 minutes per game differential. A letdown because of a big win from Bowling Green has not been an issue as it is 5-0 ATS in its last five games following a win of more than 20 points. Also, the Falcons have gone 5-0 ATS in their last five games against losing teams while going 5-0 ATS in their last five games against Akron. Additionally, we play on home favorites of 10.5 to 21 points that are coming off a home win by 28 points or more, with four or more total starters returning than opponent. This situation is 34-11 ATS (75.6 percent) since 1992. 10* (170) Bowling Green Falcons

09-28-13 | Miami (OH) v. Illinois -24 | Top | 14-50 | Win | 100 | 112 h 38 m | Show |
Illinois closes its nonconference part of the schedule this week before Big Ten play opening up next weekend. The Illini have had a week off following their first loss of the season against Washington which took place at Soldier Field so they are back on their home field where they are 2-0 thus far. This is a big number we are backing but I think it could be even bigger and is more than justified. The marquee win so far was here against Cincinnati as they blew out the Bearcats by 28 points. Coincidentally, that is the same team that Miami lost to last week as it was shutout at home 14-0. That is a very misleading final score however as the RedHawks managed only four first down and 87 total yards while Cincinnati put up 369 yards and 24 first downs but could not score until the fourth quarter. Three turnovers and some questionable playcalling was the difference in the Bearcats not rolling by much more. That final score is helping us out here as it is part of the reason the line is lower than it should be. Miami is ranked 123rd in total offense, 120th in rushing offense, 121st in passing offense and 121st in scoring offense so you can see how inept this team has been. The other side of the ball is not much better as the defense is ranked 108th or worse in the four categories and overall, the RedHawks are ranked 100th or worse in 15 of 25 statistical categories that the NCAA keeps track of. We knew coming on this team would not be very good and it has actually been even worse than expected. The RedHawks entered the season opener with 12 seniors, 14 juniors, 23 sophomores and 51 freshmen. Coming off a loss where the game was scoreless after three quarters against Cincinnati in a big rival game for the Victory Bell makes this spot even tougher for the RedHawks. Illinois has not been totally consistent but the offense has shown some excellent signs and giving offensive coordinator Bill Cubit an additional week to add in new plays could only bolster an Illinois offense that has already exceeded expectations. Although having nine starters back on offense from last season definitely helps. The Illini defense got lit up by Washington pretty bad but I am not concerned at all about facing this Miami offense that has converted three third down conversions all season long (3-40). Illinois falls into an awesome scheduling situation as we play on home favorites of 21.5 to 31 points that are coming off a bye week. This situation is 44-9 ATS (83 percent) over the last 10 seasons. This includes a perfect 9-0 record over the last three seasons with the average point differential being +35.1 ppg over those 53 games. Additionally, Miami is 0-7-1 ATS in its last eight games as a road underdog. 10* (132) Illinois Fighting Illini

09-27-13 | Utah State v. San Jose State +10 | Top | 40-12 | Loss | -110 | 55 h 8 m | Show |
The Spartans opened the season with a win over Sacramento St. of the FCS but they have since dropped their last two games. They lost at Stanford which came as no surprise although they did hang around for longer than most expected. San Jose St. then lost at Minnesota last week by 19 points however that is a deceiving final score as the Spartans were far from dominated. San Jose St. lost the turnover battle 3-0 and went just 1-9 on third down conversions so that was the difference between keeping the game close and losing as bad as it did. This is a big game for them as they are coming off two road games with two more road games on deck so winning at home becomes even more important. We played on Utah St. last week as the Aggies were able to keep it close enough against USC to give them their third straight cover. The public has fallen in love with this Aggie team and why not considering they are 13-2-1 ATS since the start of last season but I feel they are overpriced in this one. Utah St. is already 1-0 in the MWC after defeating Air Force three games back on the road but the test will be a lot tougher here in my opinion. They are coming off a tough loss and that could be tough to recover from. "I'd rather lose by 100 than three, so it hurts," Aggies cornerback Nevin Lawson said. "I can tell it hurts the team that we were the better team but ended up losing." This is a pretty big revenge game for the Spartans as they were embarrassed last year in San Jose. Utah St. recorded 13 sacks while allowing San Jose St. to gain just four yards rushing. Still, when he wasn't eating turf, quarterback David Fales, who entered the year as a highly rated 2014 NFL Draft prospect, put up 467 yards and three touchdowns on the Aggies and he is having an outstanding season thus far. On a positive note for the Spartans, their offensive line did not allow a single sack to the Gophers after allowing three to Stanford. Let's not forget that the Spartans went 11-2 last season and they return 13 starters as well so this is a very solid team that matches up well with speed. San Jose St. is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 games as an underdog over the last three seasons while going a perfect 5-0 ATS in its last five games as a home underdog. Also, the Spartans are 6-0 ATS in their last six games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game. Meanwhile, Utah St. is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games as a road favorite coming off a nonconference game. We have the luxury of catching a number at home and a big number for that matter. A close game even without a win cashes a ticket. 10* (110) San Jose St. Spartans

09-26-13 | San Francisco 49ers -3 v. St. Louis Rams | Top | 35-11 | Win | 100 | 32 h 50 m | Show |
It is gut check time for the 49ers. For the first time since Jim Harbaugh became head coach, San Francisco is under .500 for the season. Granted, it is only his third season but still. A loss here could be devastating even though it is early as the 49ers could feasibly find themselves three games behind Seattle in the NFC West come Sunday afternoon. A loss at Seattle was not overly shocking as it took place on the road but a home loss against the Colts in the follow up game was definitely shocking. The two games lost by a combined 46 points but San Francisco was outgained by just 83 and 82 in those games which makes us believe something is up. And it is. The 49ers lost the turnover battle 7-1 in those contests and they will not be winning many games going that, nor will many others. The Rams have an identical 1-2 record as they won at home but lost both games on the road. A return home would ideally help here but playing a Super Bowl contender coming off two losses is not what the doctor ordered. The lone St. Louis victory came against Arizona so it certainly wasn't a quality win but despite its own pooor play, don't think the 49ers are going to be taking this team lightly. St. Louis has given them fits, especially last season when they played to a tie in San Francisco while the Rams won in overtime at home in the second meeting. That game brings up a very interesting point as well. The 49ers were favored by 7.5 points then and now they are favored by just a field goal showing how the betting markets are taking this early poor start way out too seriously. There is no way the Rams have closed the gap by four points over a span of seven games where they have gone 3-4. The status for the 49ers two star defensive players in Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis is not good as Smith is in rehab and Willis has a groin injury that will keep both of them out here. That no doubt hurts the defense but the Rams have not shown much as they are 23rd in scoring offense and 18th in total offense. The running game has been putrid as St. Louis is 29th in yards and 27th in ypc average. However, defensively is where the Rams have really been bad as they are 26th in both scoring and overall and if there is a game that San Francisco can break out of its offensive woes, this is the one. The Thursday night home crowd will be loud but it will not be enough to keep the 49ers slumping. San Francisco falls into a great situation as we play on road teams where the line is +3 to -3 that are coming off an upset loss by 10 points or more as a favorite. This situation is 35-12 ATS (74.5 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (101) San Francisco 49ers

09-26-13 | Virginia Tech +7 v. Georgia Tech | Top | 17-10 | Win | 100 | 33 h 30 m | Show |
We played against Virginia Tech last week as Marshall hung tough and eventually lost in triple overtime. The Hokies survived a scare and now head to Georgia Tech for their ACC opener. Last season was a huge disappointment for Virginia Tech as it failed to record double-digit wins for the first time since 2003 and fans were calling for head coach Frank Beamer's head. A big season this year will dissipate that and that is what I am expecting, especially in ACC play. Georgia Tech is 3-0 for only the second time since 2006 and it got away with one last week against North Carolina after taking care of Elon and Duke, certainly not the best of competition. It is hard to figure out what is going on with Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas as he has regressed over the last three years, completing 59.8 percent of his passes in 2011 to 51.3 percent last year to 48.5 percent this year. That is certainly part of the reason the offense is ranked 102nd in the nation in total offense and 85th in scoring offense. The redzone offense has been a letdown but some of Virginia Tech's scoring issues are kicking-related. The Hokies have missed six consecutive field goals the past two games. Redshirt senior Cody Journell will be the team's starting place kicker Thursday night though after a bad game against East Carolina and then a suspension last week. He was 36 of his 44 career field goals before slipping up against the Pirates. The Yellow Jackets are once again one of the top rushing teams in the nation as they are ranked fourth, averaging 345.3 ypg. They do not throw the ball much but when they do, they have been efficient as they are fifth in offensive passing efficiency compared to just 115th in passing offense. It is never easy for a defense to prepare for this offense but Virginia Tech has done an excellent job the last couple years and the Hokies defense is again playing at a high level while nine returning starters does not hurt. To compensate the short rest, the Hokies spent their past several Sunday practices on Georgia Tech preparation. They are fifth in the country in total defense, 15th in rushing defense and sixth in passing efficiency defense. This is a big reason they have won the yardage battle in each of their four games including Alabama. Virginia Tech lost that game by 25 points but three of Alabama's five touchdowns were by the special teams and defense. This has been a very low scoring series of late as five of the last six games have stayed under the total. That is good news for the underdog which has covered in each of those games that stayed below the number and this year, we are seeing the lowest posted over/under over the last five years which means another low scoring game is expected. 10* (103) Virginia Tech Hokies

09-22-13 | Chicago Bears v. Pittsburgh Steelers +3 | 40-23 | Loss | -120 | 82 h 46 m | Show
We got burned by the Steelers on Monday night as they could not rebound from their opening weekend home loss to Tennessee. Pittsburgh now returns home in what is a must win situation before their season spirals out of control. Only three other 0-3 teams have made the playoffs in the last 23 years and in the rugged AFC, it will be unlikely to happen this year. The situation sets up very nicely for a bounceback victory as the home field edge will be even greater during a Sunday night game. The fact that Pittsburgh comes into this game as a home underdog is a rarity as it has happened only two other times under head coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers won and covered both of those games. While the Steelers have not been able to break through, the Bears are off to a 2-0 start thanks to two late comebacks. They rallied from an 11-point deficit against the Bengals in their season opener and then last week against the Vikings, they waiting until the final seconds to stage the rally as they scored the game-winning touchdown with 10 seconds remaining. The wins were close and Chicago was far from dominating as it was outgained by 17 yards by Cincinnati and outgained Minnesota by just 61 yards. On top that, both of those games were at home and while the Bears were a solid 5-3 on the road last season, they are being asked to do a lot here in a very bad situation. The Steelers main problem in the first two weeks is their inability to get the ball in the endzone and they have managed to score only two offensive touchdowns on 19 drives this season. They have averaged a woeful 9.5 ppg which is fewer than all but two teams in the league and they are ranked second-to-last in the league in total offense and rushing offense. The Bears are known for defense but it has been pretty soft so far this year. They have managed to record just two sacks and 10 quarterback pressures through the first two weeks, a far cry from the eight sacks the defense had after two regular-season games in 2012. While the offense has struggled, the defense is still keeping the games close. Opposing teams passing attacks have been limited by the pressure up front and solid secondary play. Teams are only averaging 198 ypg through the air against the Steelers. We play on teams after a game where they forced no turnovers going up against an opponent after a game where they forced three or more turnovers. This situation is 132-74 ATS (64.1 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Additionally, the Steelers are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 home games after scoring 14 points or less last game. 9* (418) Pittsburgh Steelers

09-22-13 | Jacksonville Jaguars +19 v. Seattle Seahawks | 17-45 | Loss | -107 | 79 h 59 m | Show
This game fits my contrarian style perfectly. The Jaguars are deemed the worst team in football and through two games they have scored a grand total of one touchdown. That alone is going to make many people think this is a crazy pick but if anything, this is a crazy line. We do not see spreads this big in the NFL very often and while it is common knowledge by now, favorites simply do not cover numbers this big. This line has crept below 20 points but I would not be surprised to see it move its way back up there by gametime and it is better knowing that 20-point or more underdogs are a perfect 6-0 ATS since 1980. Seattle comes into this game 2-0 after thumping divisional rival San Francisco last Sunday night 29-3. The Seahawks defense has allowed only 10 points thorough their first two games so common thinking is that Seattle will not be giving up much on defense here either. However, this is the NFL and we cannot use common thinking when it comes to obvious situations like this. How can the Seahawks possibly get sky high for the Jaguars after last week's huge win over the 49ers? They can't plain and simple. And with a game at Houston next week, the goal here is to just win, stay healthy and get ready for next week. To no surprise, Jacksonville is dead last in total offense and scoring offense while Seattle is first in total defense and scoring defense. That will have people thinking shutout but remember that no team is as good as they looked the previous week or as bad as they looked the previous week. While the Jaguars are not going to run all over Seattle, don't be surprised to see them score a fair amount here as defense is triggered by emotion and there will not be much of that here. Conversely, Jacksonville is ranked a respectable ninth in total defense. You will hear how Pete Carroll doesn't care about taking his foot off the gas as he will run it up when he feels he can. Don't expect that here though. Jacksonville head coach Gus Bradley was the defensive coordinator in Seattle the last four years under Carroll and as much as Bradley would love win beat his former team, Carroll will not run up the score out of respect for his former coordinator. The Jaguars have a sensational league-wide situation on their side as we play against favorites after a win by 14 or more points going up against an opponent after two straight losses by 10 or more points. This situation is 25-5 ATS (83.3 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Do we have an upset in the making? Probably not. But getting this many points in any NFL game is simply too good to pass up. 9* (413) Jacksonville Jaguars

09-22-13 | Houston Texans v. Baltimore Ravens +2.5 | Top | 9-30 | Win | 100 | 97 h 0 m | Show |
The Ravens bounced back from their season opening loss at Denver with a home win against Cleveland this past Sunday although it was far from pretty and far from dominating. Baltimore could have easily been sidetracked from all of the Super Bowl celebrations going on but now with that in the rearview mirror, I am expecting a full focus this Sunday. The indifferent start for Baltimore has it now listed a home underdog this week which I think is the wrong role and definitely at the wrong time. Houston is off to a 2-0 starts and while it has won the yardage battle by 186 yards and 204 yards in those games, the victories have come by just a combined nine points including a win in overtime last week against the Texans. Houston has yet to make it over the hump during the playoffs as it has defeated Cincinnati in the first round each of the last two years only to lose in the next round, both of which were on the road. The Texans have been a pretty solid road team during the regular season the last two years, going 11-5 but they have gone four straight games on the highway without covering. I think the big surprise here is that they are favorites on the road despite posting a 0-2 ATS record in their first two games and teams in this situation are a dismal 8-21-1 ATS when going up against a team coming off a win. It is no secret that Baltimore lost a lot during the offseason on both sides of the ball and it has definitely showed in the overall rankings through two weeks but I do not think it is anything to be alarmed by considering the Ravens will only get better with each game. To take some pressure off Joe Flacco and his receivers, the Ravens have to run the ball more. Against the Broncos, Flacco passed the ball 62 times while the one-two punch of Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce only got 21 combined carries. Against Cleveland, Flacco passed 24 times while the Ravens ran the ball only seven times in the fist half. Once balanced was achieved in the second half with a concerted effort to run the ball, Baltimore scored two second half touchdowns. While the Texans defense gets a lot of pub, they have not performed well this season as the unit is 23rd in points allowed and while that can be skewed, it does show vulnerability as well. Ray Rice is questionable but Bernard Pierce is more than capable as makes people miss and has a career 4.5 ypc average. A real clincher is the revenge factor. Baltimore went to Houston last season and got thumped 43-13 and that was the worst loss ever for a John Harbaugh coached Ravens team. This game has been circled for 11 months. 10* (398) Baltimore Ravens

09-22-13 | Detroit Lions v. Washington Redskins -1 | Top | 27-20 | Loss | -123 | 77 h 16 m | Show |
Washington was the sexy pick to make a deep run into the playoffs this year after a great ending to last season but after a 0-2 start, people have started to get sour on the Redskins. The season is far from over and the winless start has put Washington in a desperation mode already and that actually sets up well here. We are catching a very short price with the Redskins which are back home for their first Sunday game of the season in Washington. The situation is pretty simple in that Washington needs to get off to a better start if they want any chance in this game. The Redskins have trailed by a combined score of 50-7 at halftime through the first two games so playing from behind has dealt them no chance of catching up. That changes here. The Lions opened the season with a solid home win over the Vikings before stumbling last week in Arizona. Detroit held an eight-point lead late in the third quarter but it was outscored 12-0 down the stretch to make it four straight losses on the road dating back to last season. Nonetheless, the Lions are still getting too much credit as they were favored last week and are getting a shorter than anticipated price this week which is confusing to me. Put this team on the carpet and they can compete with anyone but they are far from the best team we have seen on grass. Detroit is just 2-12 ATS in its last 14 games coming off a loss when favored including a 0-4 ATS record last season and they are also 2-12 ATS in their last 14 road games against a non-divisional opponent that is coming off consecutive losses. The matchup does seem to favor the Lions as they bring in one of the top passing offenses in the league to face the worst passing defense in the NFL. The Redskins are allowing a league-worst QB rating of 135.4 but they faced an unknown Eagles offense in their first game and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay in their second game and those are two tough matchups. I think this is the easiest of the three thus far and let's not forget the Lions will likely be without running back Reggie Bush. They were scoreless against Arizona once he left the game. On the other side, RGIII is in his third game and he could be in for a massive day. Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is 18-6-1 ATS in his 25 games coming off consecutive losses against an opponent off a loss and Washington falls into a great situation on top of it. Play against teams where the line is +3 to -3 that are coming off a road loss, in the first month of the season, after closing out last season with three or more straight losses. This situation is 33-10 ATS (76.7 percent) since 1983. 10* (404) Washington Redskins

09-22-13 | San Diego Chargers v. Tennessee Titans -3 | Top | 17-20 | Push | 0 | 76 h 15 m | Show |
Tennessee heads back to Nashville for its home opener following what was a very successful two-game roadtrip to open the season. The Titans went into Pittsburgh and defeated the Steelers opening weekend and they had a chance to make it a sweep last week as they took Houston into overtime before losing on a Matt Schaub touchdown pass. The offense remains a work in progress as they have yet to eclipse 250 yards of offense in a game but the defense has played good enough for them to be successful. To their credit, the titans have played two very strong defenses in the Steelers and Texans and now they square off against the 31st-ranked Chargers defense so the offense has the potential for a big game. After losing a heartbreaker against Houston on opening weekend, the Chargers did not hang their heads as they went into Philadelphia last week and defeated the Eagles with a field goal with seven seconds remaining. Now San Diego has to head back east once again putting it in a tough situation coming off that big win. Quarterback Philip Rivers seems reenergized as he is having a solid season through two games, throwing for 614 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception. He will be without Malcolm Floyd however who suffered a neck injury last week after putting up 102 receiving yards before going down. That is a big loss. While the Titans offense has been slowed, the play of quarterback Jake Locker last week was solid. He led two long scoring drives in the game and capped each of them with a touchdown pass. His six-yard touchdown connection with Kendall Wright in the first quarter completed an 80-yard drive, and in the fourth quarter, he directed a 99-yard march that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Delanie Walker. San Diego is dead last in the league in passing defense but it doesn't end there as the Chargers are allowing 4.3 ypc on the ground, and the Titans have made it clear that they will feed running back Chris Johnson the ball. Getting him going will set up the passing game even more. While history means little, the Chargers have won nine straight meetings in this series but it is the one last year that the Titans remember as they were slammed in San Diego 38-10 while getting outgained by over 200 total yards. Floyd had six receptions for 109 yards in that game but again, he will be out for this one. Taking care of the ball will be important for the Titans as they have yet to turn it over this season. The Chargers are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a straight up victory while Tennessee is 6-0 ATS in its last six games after accumulating less than 250 total yards in its previous game. Additionally, San Diego is 0-4 ATS in its last four games after scoring more than 30 points in their previous game. 10* (392) Tennessee Titans

09-21-13 | Wyoming v. Air Force +3.5 | Top | 56-23 | Loss | -106 | 102 h 3 m | Show |
Wyoming is off to a 2-1 start this season with the lone loss coming at Nebraska by just three points. That loss actually looked like a quality loss when it first happened but following the Huskers blowout home loss against UCLA this past weekend, it is not looking so good after all. The two Cowboys victories to follow came against Idaho, one of the worst teams in the FBS, and Northern Colorado, a below average team from the FCS. Wyoming is a perfect 3-0 against the number and because of this, it is now in the role of a road favorite which is certainly a rarity for this team. Air Force is also helping that out. The Falcons opened the season with an easy win over Colgate from the FCS but it has been all downhill from there. They remained home in their next games and got thumped by Utah St., losing by 32 points and getting outgained by 307 total yards. It did not help that quarterback Kale Pearson was injured in the previous game which put a lot of pressure on Jaleel Awini in his first start. The Falcons then went to Boise St. last week and played the Broncos tough for over three quarters before Boise St. scored the final two touchdowns of the games to pull away. Awini played a much better game and now with two starts under his belt and taking a big step down in class this week, he could be in line for that breakout game. Coming off their first losing season in six years, the Falcons came into this year with some high expectations despite just 10 starters returning mainly because they had just five coming back in 2012. the last two losses were definitely some confidence killers but a win here could turn the season around. Air Force has lost four straight MWC games dating back to last season, but they have played the conference's elite. It closed last season at San Diego St. and at Fresno St., who were tri-champions, opened this season against the Aggies in their first year in the MWC after finishing first in the WAC and then Boise St. last week. The four combined opponents were 27-3 in conference play and 40-12 overall last season so it has been a brutal stretch. The underdog has covered five straight meetings in this series and Air Force has a great situation on its side based on the end of lat year as we play on underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points in the first month of the season, bowl team from prior season who lost their last two games. This situation is 40-17 ATS (70.2 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Wyoming is just 10-22 ATS in its last 32 games following wins in two of its previous three games. Look for the mild upset in Colorado Springs Saturday night. 10* (344) Air Force Falcons

09-21-13 | Kansas State v. Texas -3.5 | Top | 21-31 | Win | 100 | 101 h 15 m | Show |
Everyone is down on Texas right now and rightfully so. After a blowout win against New Mexico St. to open the season, the Longhorns were throttled at BYU the following week and instead of bouncing back after that, they were beaten badly against last week at home against Mississippi. The situation in Texas looks dire for head coach Mack Brown and company but this is a good opportunity to buy low and this is further proven by the early line for this game that came out in July at Texas -9. Even this line has come down from its opening this week at other sportsbooks and I think the value in this number is tremendous. It has been just the opposite for Kansas St. which opened the season with a home loss against North Dakota St. but then followed that up with two bounceback wins. Those games were against Massachusetts and Louisiana though so there is not to those victories if you ask me. Coming into the season, we knew that it was going to be a rebuilding year for the Wildcats as they lost their quarterback, top wide receiver and nine starters on defense so losing against the Bison in the season opener was not a huge surprise, especially considering they are the top ranked team in the FCS. As good as that is, Kansas St. should not be losing to any FCS team, especially at home, and now it hits the road for the first time this season. The Wildcats have owned this series with wins in five straight meetings but it wasn't like they dominated Texas in those games. It came down to turnovers which eventually gave them an edge in field position. In those five victories, the Wildcats average turnover margin is 2.6 (13 turnover margin in five games) and their average starting field position margin was 9.2, meaning they consistently started almost 10 yards closer to the end zone than Texas during the winning streak. This made a huge difference considering the Longhorns have averaged 369.8 ypg while holding Kansas St. to 274.2 ypg during the streak and the Wildcats have not won the yardage battle against Texas in any of those wins. Kansas St.'s offense has been horrible, going three-and-out 42 percent of the time and averaging 3.07 ypc during the win streak. The Texas defense has not looked very strong thus far this year but I see a big step up here. The big thing is attitude. The preparation and effort has always been there, and it is just a matter of going out and playing. Players on the defense said they are ready to go out and change what they have seen in the past two weeks and instead of breaking apart, which often causes an even worse downward spiral, the Longhorns' seniors have come together and tried to propel forward. The Longhorns are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a double-digit loss at home, winning the last two occurrences by a combined score of 84-17. 10* (358) Texas Longhorns

09-21-13 | Oregon State v. San Diego State +11 | 34-30 | Win | 100 | 93 h 48 m | Show
We played on San Diego St. two weeks ago against Ohio St. with the thinking it would rebound and play a lot better after losing at home the previous week against Eastern Illinois. It didn't quite work out that way as the Aztecs were blasted by 35 points and missed the cover by a touchdown. Those two results have put some pressure on San Diego St. to turn things around but most important for our situation, it has given the Aztecs a ton of value. While their season is far from done, they need to get a win for confidence sake alone before heading into conference action where they were one of the preseason favorites to win the MWC West Division. Offensively, things need to turn around and they have the shot to do it here. Oregon St. also lost to a team from the FCS to open the season as it lost to Eastern Washington before defeating Hawaii in its next game. The Beavers then went to Utah last week and won in overtime against the Utes by three points so coming off that game could be an issue. Oregon St.'s pass defense is ranked 113th nationally as it allowed 411 passing yards in the season opening defeat to Eastern Washington and couldn't stop Utah quarterback Travis Wilson, who ran for 142 yards and three scores while throwing for 279 yards and another two touchdowns. San Diego St. quarterback Adam Dingwell was hurt against Ohio St. and did not return but is listed as probable this week and could be in store for a big game. The running game has been an area of concern for both teams. The Aztecs rushing offense, which is averaging 93 ypg has been woeful so far this season, but Oregon St.'s is worse. The Beavers are averaging 70 ypg, and to compound matters, leading rusher Storm Woods (45 carries, 152 yards and two touchdowns over three games) sustained a concussion at Utah and will not play against the Aztecs. If there is one reassuring thing about Oregon St.'s high-powered offense, it is that the Beavers run a pro-style system, something the Aztecs defense is used to seeing in practice every day. Even better is the fact that San Diego St. is coming off its bye week which was very helpful for preparation and optimism. Oregon St. was favored by 6.5 points when this game of the year line was released by the Golden Nugget back in June which shows how much value we have gotten since then thanks to the winless start for the Aztecs. While things have been tough for the Aztecs, I am far from sold on the Beavers which are 9-23 ATS in their last 32 road games in the first month of the season. San Diego St. meanwhile is 11-5 ATS in its last 16 games after a bye and if ever there was a good time for a week off, last week was it. 9* (382) San Diego St. Aztecs

09-21-13 | Tennessee +17 v. Florida | 17-31 | Win | 100 | 89 h 51 m | Show
It has been an incredibly tough few years for Tennessee which was once one of the top programs in the country on an annual basis. The Volunteers have had just one winning season over their last five years and with the hiring of Butch Jones as head coach, he becomes the fourth head coach Tennessee has had over that stretch. Even though the Volunteers got smacked at Oregon last week, this is still considered one of the better Tennessee teams in recent years and let's face it, not many teams can hang with the Ducks in Eugene. The Volunteers easily won their first two games of the season and now comes the challenge of defeating Florida in looking to break an eight-game losing streak in this series. The last six Florida-Tennessee games had an average margin of 19 points, with each of them being decided by double digits. Even worse, Tennessee also has lost its last 17 games against ranked opponents and is 1-23 versus Top 25 teams since 2008. So why are we betting on the Volunteers here? We are able to buy low at this point of the season against a team that is not incredibly strong on offense to be able to cover such a big number. The Volunteers struggled to get in defensive play calls versus the speed of the Ducks last week and those communication breakdowns turned into huge plays, and after a couple touchdowns, Tennessee unraveled. They do not have to worry about that type of speed this week. Florida has the ability on offense to put up big numbers but it has managed only 20 ppg through two games and one of those came against Toledo. In Week Two against Miami, Florida ran 77 offensive plays while Oregon ran 76 against Tennessee. Almost an identical number of plays, but it's the amount of time each team went about their business and most importantly, at what rate each team ran their plays that is the most telling about their style. Right now, for Florida, the plan on offense is to eat up as much time as possible and move at a slower pace and that is fine with us here getting the amount of points we are getting. It will be up to the Tennessee offense to do its part as well. The offensive line has been solid thus far as the Volunteers have allowed just two sacks which is tied for second fewest in the SEC. The Gators defense has been one of the best in the nation and it will be important for the Tennessee running game to get going. The Volunteers are 5-0 ATS in their last five games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game but more importantly, Jones has proven to be a great motivator as his teams are a perfect 11-0 ATS in their last 11 games after getting outgained by 125 or more yards the previous game. 9* (315) Tennessee Volunteers

09-21-13 | Utah State +7 v. USC | 14-17 | Win | 100 | 89 h 49 m | Show
We won with USC last week as it destroyed Boston College 35-7. We were able to buy the Trojans low based on their loss against Washington St. and the fact that the public was completely against them. Now that victory has sparked some resurgence for USC and even though the line this week is much lower, they are facing a much tougher opponent. USC dominated the Eagles, outgaining them by 337 total yards as the offense racked up 521 yards while the defense allowed only 184 yards including just 83 yards in the air. The defense will be challenged this week and while it did shut down the Cougars two weeks ago, this will be an even tougher challenge. Utah St. lost its opening game against Utah in what was a big revenge game for the Utes. The Aggies went down by just four points despite outgaining Utah by 37 yards as the game came down to two late field goals. Utah St. was able to bounce back in dominating fashion as it easily took care of Air Force and Weber St. by a combined score of 122-26 thanks to winning the total yardage battle by a combined 756 yards. Coming off that game against the Wildcats and with a game at San Jose St. on deck, the full focus will be on USC this week although it would take a lot for it not to be. The Aggies continue to be a covering machine as they are now 13-2-1 ATS in their last 16 games and I feel the value is still on their side based on going up against the publicly backed Trojans. The Aggies are headed into one of the biggest opportunities in their history as winning at USC would mark a level of success the program has never achieved. You only have to go back a few years and Utah St. never would have been able to compete here. Now the Aggies have the eighth ranked scoring offense in the nation and while facing a tough Trojans defense will not be easy, this team continues to play confidently knowing it can hang with the big boys. The Aggies fall into a great situation where we play on road underdogs with an offense averaging 450 or more ypg, after gaining 7.25 or more yppl in their previous game. This situation is 30-6 ATS (83.3 percent) over the last five seasons. Coming off a big win has not distracted Utah St. in the past as it is 8-0 ATS in its last eight games following a win by 21 or more points. USC meanwhile is 0-7 ATS in its last seven games after outgaining its opponent by 125 or more total yards in its previous game. Additionally, the Trojans are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a win of more than 20 points. 9* (349) Utah St. Aggies

09-21-13 | Marshall +9.5 v. Virginia Tech | Top | 21-29 | Win | 100 | 93 h 0 m | Show |
Marshall is coming off a very frustrating loss last week against Ohio which put an end to its perfect start to the season. After blowing out two cupcakes to open the year, the Thundering Herd were awaiting their first test against the Bobcats and they would have passed it had they not lost the turnover battle 4-0. Marshall outgained Ohio 482-339, had a 28-19 first down edge and converted 9 of 13 on third down. One of the turnovers killed a Marshall drive while two others resulted in 10 points for Ohio. The Thundering Herd defense was outstanding as they allowed just 335 total yards including a mere 60 yards rushing on 36 carries (1.7 ypc). Now they go from more than a touchdown road favorite to nearly a double-digit road underdog which is a big swing for a team that has outgained their opponents by a combined 825 total yards. After getting blasted by Alabama by 25 points, Virginia bounced back against a helpless Western Carolina team as it outgained the Catamounts by 300 total yards in the 45.3 win. The Hokies then hit the road for the first time last week and snuck out a win against East Carolina by only five points. The Virginia Tech defense was outstanding as it allowed only 204 total yards to a very solid Pirates offense but its own offense struggled once again as it gained only 311 total yards including just 53 yards rushing on 34 carries (1.6 ypc). The Hokies return home which is a big edge as home field in Blacksburg is always a huge advantage but taking some of that away is the fact that this is a noon start which takes a lot of the crown out of the game. The best player on the field is on the Marshall side and many have probably not heard of quarterback Rakeem Cato. He led the FBS in passing yards last season at 350.1 ypg, is averaging 283 yards this year and has a complementary running attack. The Virginia Tech offense remains a mystery as it has been as pedestrian as can be. In its final six games last year against FBS opponents, Clemson, Miami, Florida St., Boston College, Virginia and Rutgers, and the first two this season, the offense produced two or fewer touchdowns. Marshall has a stout defense this season and while the opposition has had something to do with that, the right pieces are in place. Chuck Heater is Marshall's first-year defensive coordinator and he was part of national championship staffs at Notre Dame and Florida so he knows what he is doing. The Marshall turnover turnaround will be big as well and it helps knowing the Thundering Herd are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games following a turnover margin of -4 or worse. Meanwhile the Hokies are just 4-14 ATS in their last 18 games following a win. 10* (329) Marshall Thundering Herd

This is a huge game in the MWC that comes early in the season as Boise St. and Fresno St. are expected to win their respective division and meet in the first ever MWC Championship. Boise St. enters this game on a two-game winning streak after easily defeating Tennessee-Martin and Air Force at home following a blowout loss at Washington to open the season. While the Broncos were not tested in the last two games but were clearly tested in the opener and failed miserably, the jury is still out on them but I do not like this matchup for them at all. The road loss to the Huskies was just the third road loss for Boise St. since 2008 but it looks vulnerable for the first time since then as well. Fresno St. is off to a 2-0 start and is coming off a week that saw its game postponed in Colorado due to the flooding that took place. Despite not playing, Fresno St. just returned to the national rankings for the first time since 2008, cracking the USA Today coaches' poll. The Bulldogs opened the season with a closer than expected win against Rutgers as it took overtime to get the victory. They were able to bounce back rather easily in their next game and while Fresno St. did get outgained by Cal Poly, most of the Mustangs yardage came in garbage time after the Bulldogs opened up a 41-3 lead and took all of the starters out. To say Fresno St. has had this game circled for a while would be an understatement. The Bulldogs have lost seven straight meetings against Boise St. and none of those losses were by single digits so it has been complete domination. Things are different now and Fresno St. is actually favored for the first time since the streak begin. "Ever since I got to Fresno, if there is one team everyone wants to beat, it's Boise," said head coach Tim DeRuyter. And now they have an offense to do so. Boise St. will face one of the best quarterbacks it will see all year as Derek Carr was the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year last season and leads a group of seven returning starters on offense. He threw for over 4,100 yards last year and this season he has averaged 330.5 ypg while tossing eight touchdowns and just one interception and completing 71.2 percent of his throws. The Broncos defense struggled mightily with the up-tempo spread against Washington which is a similar offense Fresno St. runs. The Huskies had 592 yards of total offense, averaging 7.0 yppl. Quarterback Keith Price completed 23 of 31 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns, and the Huskies added another 268 yards on the ground. The Bulldogs are just as potent and could be in for a huge night. The Bulldogs defense has eight starters back from a unit that improved by close to 100 ypg last season from 2011. All of this translates into the streak finally being broken on Friday night. 10* (306) Fresno St. Bulldogs

09-19-13 | Kansas City Chiefs v. Philadelphia Eagles -3 | Top | 26-16 | Loss | -117 | 35 h 22 m | Show |
The Eagles looked great in their opener at Washington last Monday as they stormed out of the gates on offense and never looked back to pick up a season opening win. Things were not as good last week in their home opener despite another big day on offense. Philadelphia racked up 511 total yards of offense and after spotting San Diego to a 13-3 lead, it was able to come back and take the lead midway through the fourth quarter but the defense could not hold as the Chargers kicked the game winning field goal with seven seconds remaining. After two weeks, the offense is ranked third in scoring and second overall but the issue remains with the defense as the Eagles are 28th in scoring defense and 30th in total defense. Playing two pretty potent offenses has not helped matters but I expect the stop unit to tighten up this week. The Chiefs are off to a 2-0 start under new head coach Andy Reid as he makes his return to Philadelphia. Kansas City definitely got a scheduling break as it was able to open the season against lowly Jacksonville and then played its home opener against Dallas which was coming off a huge Sunday night win against the Giants the previous week. The Chiefs were outgained slightly against the Cowboys but the defense did its job for a second straight week. The offense though remains a work in progress with new quarterback Alex Smith. He has been very efficient with a 94.7 passer rating and while Kansas City is 16th in the NFL in scoring offense, it is just 26th in total offense which is a big reason I feel the Eagles will be able to improve immensely on defense this week. Kansas City is second in the NFL in rushing defense however part of that is due to it has seen the fewest rushing attempts of any team in the league. After the Eagles put up 263 yards on the ground in Washington, they came back and rushed for just 89 yards against San Diego but they did run the ball just 20 times. Overall, Philadelphia is averaging a healthy 5.1 ypc which is fifth best in the NFL and as long as it gets back to a balanced attack from not having to play catch up, the Chiefs could be in for a long night. The Chiefs have yet to commit a turnover this season which is another big reason they are off to an undefeated start. That will not last. The Eagles have not covered a home game since the season finale two years ago as they are 0-8-1 ATS in their last nine games at home and that is helping keep this line down to just a field goal. While the big story is Reid coming back to Philadelphia, it means absolutely nothing in this matchup and I expect the Eagles top come out strong and force the Chiefs to play catch up this time. 10* (302) Philadelphia Eagles

09-19-13 | Clemson -13 v. North Carolina State | Top | 26-14 | Loss | -115 | 58 h 10 m | Show |
Taking a look at home underdogs in these matchups is the first option, especially with these nationally televised games. That being said, we quickly came off that in this particular matchup and will be backing the road team even though it will be a very public play. The line has come down slightly in most spots after some early Wolfpack money but that puts us in a better situation to bet this one now with the spread under the key number of 14. This one comes down to talent and there is no comparison between the two teams. Clemson opened the season with a huge win against Georgia and then followed that up with an easy victory over South Carolina St. from the FCS. After going 11-2 last season, this is the best Clemson team in head coach Dabo Sweeney's six years at the helm. The offense can score at will and the pace alone will be troublesome for the Wolfpack even though the defense faces a similar no huddle scheme is practice against the scout team. Speed cannot be portrayed in practice however and the Wolfpack, with just five starters back from a defense that was bad to begin with, will have a difficult time slowing the Tigers down. Clemson ran 76 plays against Georgia and ran 95 plays against South Carolina St. which doesn't bode well for the Wolfpack after Clemson ran 102 plays in last year's 62-48 win while racking up 754 yards of offense. NC State is now also running a new faster paced offense under new head coach Dave Doeren but it has not exactly been lighting it up. The Wolfpack scored 40 points against a rebuilding Louisiana Tech team while putting up just 23 points in its last game against Richmond of the FCS. Quarterback Pete Thomas was pressed into first-string duty after Brandon Mitchell went out with a broken foot and while Thomas has experience when he was at Colorado St., it was not very solid. The Tigers defense is an improved unit and will be ready here. I can guarantee that Clemson will not come in and take NC State lightly based on two factors. First off, the Tigers lost here two years ago as road favorites when they were 9-1 and ranked seventh in the nation. Second, they saw what happened to Florida St. last year as the Seminoles came in ranked third in the country with a 5-0 record and left Raleigh with a 17-16 loss. Clemson knows it cannot look past the Wolfpack. Clemson has covered five straight games on the road going back to last season and is 11-3 ATS in its last 14 games after scoring 31 points or more in two straight games. NC State is just 1-5 ATS in its last six games following a win. Expect a blowout on Thursday night. 10* (303) Clemson Tigers

09-16-13 | Pittsburgh Steelers +7 v. Cincinnati Bengals | Top | 10-20 | Loss | -120 | 13 h 37 m | Show |
The Steelers are coming off a miserable game as they lost at home against Tennessee 16-9. it looked as though things would be going their way after the Titans were called for a safety on the opening kickoff however Pittsburgh would go scoreless on offense for the entire game until it scored a touchdown with 1:23 remaining. It was certainly a performance that doesn't bring a lot of confidence into this game but the good thing is that there is no where to go but up. The loss of center Maurkice Pouncey is no doubt a huge one and that puts more pressure on the offensive line but I expect the unit to step up in his absence. This is a great example of overreacting to the first week of play as the Steelers looked bad to the public therefore they are not going to be a popular pick tonight which is just the way I like it. While the Steelers were losing at home, the Bengals looked as though they were going to win in Chicago as they took a 21-10 lead with midway through the third quarter but then both units shut down. After taking that 11-point lead, the Bengals' final three drives all resulted in three-and-outs while the defense allowed drives 81 and 80 yards with both of those being turned into touchdowns. It was a tough way to lose and while the obvious thinking here is that Cincinnati bounces back, I'm not so certain of that. It will be a great home environment for sure but I do not think the Bengals should be laying this high of a number. In Marvin Lewis' 11 seasons as head coach, the Bengals have been favored just twice against Pittsburgh and in both games, the Steelers won outright. While the Steelers offense took a lot of the blame in the loss last week, the defense did not get a lot of credit. They allowed just one play of longer than 15 yards, and they shut down the Titans' running game, allowing only 112 yards on 42 carries (2.7 ypc). The Bengals are 1-8 ATS in their last nine home games coming off a loss by three points or less. Pittsburgh meanwhile is 12-5 ATS in its last 17 games coming off a loss and after scoring 15 points or fewer, it is 9-3 ATS in its next game. This is a huge game for both sides as neither team can afford a 0-2 start as getting to the playoffs with that record is a stretch, even this early in the season. The Steelers have never started a season 0-2 during Mike Tomlin's tenure as head coach, and they don't want to start now. The thing here is that we are getting an inflated number here in a divisional matchup that easily could come down to the last possession. 10* (223) Pittsburgh Steelers

09-15-13 | Denver Broncos v. NY Giants +5 | Top | 41-23 | Loss | -110 | 75 h 29 m | Show |
Denver heads to New York for the Manning Bowl and if you can get past the hype for this one, we have a very good situation on our hands. I've stated it before as teams are not as good as they looked in their previous game and teams are not as bad as they looked in their previous game. That is the case in this matchup. Taking nothing away from what Peyton Manning and the Broncos did against Baltimore last Thursday night but some are already crowning them Super Bowl Champions. That was a big game for Denver as it was out for revenge and it took care of that. Now the Broncos hit the road where they were 6-2 last season but four of those wins came against teams that didn't even sniff the postseason. The Giants meanwhile are coming off what head coach Tom Coughlin called "one of the worst games I have ever witnessed". And he is right, New York gave the ball up six times, three fumbles and three interceptions, with two of those turnovers returned for touchdowns. The Giants still outgained the Cowboys by 147 total yards so take some for those turnovers away and New York likely wins the game which makes the game this week a completely different situation and would likely come with a different line. The loss however has provided us with not only a better line but with the public lining up on the visitor, this line could go up even more by kickoff with public money pouring in late. We have seen an early reverse line move here as the majority of the action has come in on the Broncos yet the line has come down and those are the moves we like to play. The Giants offense is going to give the Broncos some problems as Denver was never is trouble against Baltimore which had very limited options at receiver. New York had three wide receivers finish with at least 100 yards against the Cowboys, Victor Cruz with 118 yards on five catches, Hakeem Nicks with 115 yards on five catches and Rueben Randle with 101 yards on five catches. With a Denver defense that is banged up and missing others, look for the Giants to continue their offensive success. On the other side, the Giants defensive front looked much improve from a year ago, and that was with their best defensive lineman, end Jason Pierre-Paul, showing signs of rust from nearly three months of no activity following back surgery. Ping the Denver defense is impossible but slowing it down is not and that is the goal for New York. The Giants have a great situation on their side as well as we play on home teams that outscored opponents by four or more ppg last season, after scoring 30 points or more last game. This situation is 38-13 ATS (74.5 percent) since 1983. 10* (220) New York Giants

09-15-13 | New Orleans Saints v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3.5 | Top | 16-14 | Win | 100 | 75 h 16 m | Show |
This is the classic example of fading a team that played great in the first week of the season while backing a team that looked awful. The Saints got the season off to a good start following last year's debacle as they defeated Atlanta at home in a come-from-behind victory. They spotted the Falcons a 10-0 lead before coming back to take the lead and after losing the lead early in the third quarter, came back again and held on in the final seconds. New Orleans will no doubt have its strong home field advantage back this year but playing on the road has never been easy for this team and I expect a big letdown come Sunday. The Buccaneers put up a dud in New York last Sunday as they blew a late lead no thanks to a bonehead personal foul penalty in the final second which set the Jets up for the game winning field goal. Penalties were the story as Tampa Bay committed 13 of them for 102 yards and it is tough to win any game no matter the situation when that happens. Now the Buccaneers go from a road favorite to a home underdog this week which is a very big swing over the course of just one week. Tampa Bay needs to apply pressure to Drew Brees in order to slow him down and while that was unheard of last year in the two losses, things could be different here. The pass rush was the Buccaneers weakness last season but they showed Sunday they are turning that into a strength. Tampa's blitzing linebackers hit Jets quarterback Geno Smith all day, sacking him five times and forcing a fumble. The New Orleans defense allowed just 17 points against the Falcons but did allow 367 total yards. The new look Saints defense will be the wild card in the early part of the season and it will be up to Tampa Bay to balance things out. Josh Freeman did not look very good last week but a return home should help. He posted a 72.3 passer rating on the road last year but that jumped to 91.5 in eight home games. Additionally, running back Doug Martin, who was a non-factor last week, needs a breakout game to keep the defense honest. The Saints are just 3-16 ATS in their last 19 games against winless opponents from Game Two on while Tampa Bay is 14-4 ATS in its last 18 games coming off an upset loss as a road favorite. The Buccaneers racked up 513 total yards in the home loss to the Saints last year and it will not be a surprise if that offense busts out again. 10* (214) Tampa Bay Buccaneers

09-15-13 | Dallas Cowboys v. Kansas City Chiefs -2.5 | Top | 16-17 | Loss | -125 | 72 h 19 m | Show |
I like going against teams that are coming off big wins on national television the previous week as not only does it provide the possibility for a letdown but it also gets the public wanting to go right back on them. We won with the Cowboys last Sunday night as they defeated New York by five points in what was one of the uglier games of opening weekend. Dallas benefitted from six Giants turnovers, two of which were returned for scores so it was fortunate in that regard. The Cowboys were outgained by 147 total yards so this is the prime example of a deceiving final score. We will surely take the win last week but we are in an even better position this week by fading the "false winner" from winner from last week. Kansas City is coming off an easy win over the Jaguars last Sunday as the defense did not allow a point as the only points given up came from a blocked punt for a safety. Jacksonville is clearly one of the worst teams in the NFL so a lot of people will take that Chiefs win and say there was nothing special about it. While it was definitely a game they should have won, they won it resoundingly which is a big part of it. Had Kansas City just snuck by, we would not be as high on them this week but because of the lopsided win, we feel more confident and even more so heading back to Kansas City for their home opener. The Chiefs have a pretty solid edge in coaching here as well. Andy Reid has a very good understanding of the Cowboys after spending many years in Philadelphia and playing them twice a year. Including the playoffs, Reid went 17-12 against the Cowboys during his 14 seasons coaching the Eagles. WE saw some early reverse line movement as the big percentage of bets were on the Cowboys yet the line moved the other way. Once the public gets involved, we should see this number get back down below three every where so I would suggest holding off as I see this line going one way only and that is down. The Chiefs have a solid situation on their side as well as we play on favorites in the first two weeks of the year, after closing out last season with three or more straight ATS losses. This situation is 58-27 ATS (68.2 percent) since 1983. Additionally, Dallas has not been very good in this situation as it is 3-13 ATS in its last 16 games following a win while going 7-20 ATS in its last 27 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game. 10* (210) Kansas City Chiefs

09-14-13 | Kansas v. Rice -7 | 14-23 | Win | 104 | 56 h 48 m | Show
This is the first game for Rice since playing Texas A&M on opening Saturday and giving the Aggies all they could handle for a half before they were able to pull away. The Owls still outgained Texas A&M by 23 total yards, had three more first down and controlled the clock for over 16 minutes more. That was a very impressive display and one that should not come as a huge surprise as I expect this to be one of the most improved team in the country. The Owls did win seven games last year so there is not a ton of room for improvement but with 19 starters back and a schedule that can be considered one of the easiest in the country going forward, this team can win a lot of games. Kansas on the other hand is coming off its fourth straight losing season as it went 1-11 in 2012. The good news is that the Jayhawks are already off to a 1-0 start this season but the bad news is that they started the same way a year ago only to go on to lose their next 11 games. Kansas is considered to be a better team this year despite returning only nine starters total as it is counting on a lot of transfers to contribute but until I see some progress, I just do not see how this team is going to improve by a big margin. Kansas has lost 19 straight games on the road going back to the 2009 season under Mark Mangino and the majority of those games haven't been close as 14 of those losses were by double-digits. Last week, Kansas put up just 390 yards of offense against FCS South Dakota, a team that went 1-10 last season as the Jayhawks used a no-huddle offense for much of the first half, and while they moved the ball at times, they saw drives stalled by drops, penalties and sacks. I am disappointed we missed the boat on this early line as Rice was -2.5 in some spots as soon as the line came out so it has risen substantially. However, I dot think it is an issue at all. Sure, we lost out on some value but I do not expect this game to be close at all. Rice won this meeting by a point in Kansas last year as a 12-point underdog so based on the line shift, it is telling us a lot. Kansas is 0-7 ATS in its last seven road games after playing a game at home while Rice is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 home games after gaining 475 or more total yards in their previous game. 9* (178) Rice Owls

09-14-13 | Eastern Washington v. Toledo -6.5 | 21-33 | Win | 100 | 55 h 17 m | Show
Toledo is off to a 0-2 start but you cannot blame the Rockets for not trying. They opened the season with two road games against the SEC so to say they are tested would be an understatement. Despite the winless start, this is an extremely talented and veteran team that is expected to make a lot of noise in the MAC. Throwing around the term 'must win game' is rare this early in the season but this game fits for Toledo as it has two MAC road games on deck in the nest two weeks and it needs to find some momentum and chemistry before hitting the road once again. This will be no easy task though. Eastern Washington enters this game with a 2-0 record including a major upset at Oregon St. open the season. The Eagles then easily took care of Western Oregon last week and because of the undefeated start and the upset win over the Beavers, they will not be taken lightly by the Rockets. This is no fluke team either as Eastern Washington went 11-3 last season and is considered one of the top teams in the FCS. As of this week, the Eagles are ranked second in the nation in the latest FCS Coaches Poll so they are on everyone's radar now. Going against a team of this caliber means it will be no cakewalk which typically is the case when playing FCS opposition but what it does it gives us a great number to work with as this small number is easily manageable. The offense has been the biggest disappointment for the Rockets, namely quarterback Terrance Owens who is taking a lot of heat, but they played against two SEC defenses, one of which was Florida, and that is one of the best stop units in the nation. One bright spot of the offense has been running back David Fluellen is very important in opening up the vertical passing game for Owens. Fluellen has managed only 157 yards in two games, but he is averaging 6.04 ypc in the process so he has been efficient. The Rockets held their own against Missouri last weekend, outgaining the Tigers by three yards (387-384) and pulling to within one point, 24-23, late in the third quarter. But Missouri scored on the last play of the third quarter and again on its first possession in the final period to pull away. While it was a loss, Toledo gained a lot of confidence in that game as it showed it could play with the big boys. Especially the defense as it going into its final drive in the third quarter, Missouri had just 38 yards rushing on 22 carries and going into the fourth quarter, the Tigers had generated just 205 yards of total offense. 9* (266) Toledo Rockets

09-14-13 | Mississippi State +6 v. Auburn | 20-24 | Win | 100 | 55 h 20 m | Show
Auburn is off to a 2-0 start but the question remains is it a good 2-0 or a bad 2-0? A bad 2-0 might be an oxymoron but considering the Tigers snuck by Washington St. despite getting outgained by 70 total yards and then defeated Arkansas St. by 29 points but outgained the Red Wolves by a mere 46 yards, I consider it a bad 2-0. Auburn was one of the biggest disappointments in college football last season as it went 3-9 and cost Gene Chizik his job. I do like the new coaching staff in place with Gus Malzahn back in Auburn where he was the offensive coordinator for three years prior to his one year at Arkansas St. as the head coach. I just do not think the Tigers can turn things around in a hurry and this week they are presented with their stiffest test so far. It seems as though every year since Dan Mullen took over as head coach, Mississippi St. is close to a breakthrough season only to disappoint. To his credit, he has taken the Bulldogs to a bowl game in each of the last three years and now that expectations are not so high, this would be the perfect time for that breakout to happen. Mississippi St. lost its opening game at Oklahoma St. and while the offense could get nothing going, the defense played extremely solid as it held the Cowboys to only 21 points, the first time they have been held to three touchdowns or fewer in a non-true road game since 2009. The schedule maker helped out by scheduling Alcorn St. right after though as the offense racked up 556 yards last week top gain some positive momentum and confidence heading into the SEC opener. The game against Alcorn St. also gave the time some time to heal. Mullen said Monday that quarterback Tyler Russell has not been cleared for contact after suffering a concussion in the opener against Oklahoma St., but expects him to be ready for Auburn. Russell is already one of the most successful quarterbacks in program history, throwing for 2,897 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season. Mullen also expects starting running back LaDarius Perkins, who rushed for 1,024 yards last season, and starting safety Nickoe Whitley to return against Auburn. The Bulldogs fall into a great situation as we play on road underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points in the first month of the season, after closing out last season with two or more straight losses, team that had a winning record last season. This situation is 32-6 ATS (84.2 percent) since 1992. Additionally, Auburn is 0-8 ATS in its last eight games following a win against the spread. 9* (155) Mississippi St. Bulldogs

09-14-13 | Ball State v. North Texas +3.5 | Top | 27-34 | Win | 100 | 53 h 43 m | Show |
I played against North Texas last week and we came away with a win on Ohio as the bobcats bounced back following a loss. I am expecting a similar outcome with the Mean Green on Saturday as they look to rebound and get back over .500. Playing on the road has been a struggle for North Texas over the last few years as it has only eight victories on the highway since 2006 and this is a much better team at home. The Mean Green easily took care of Idaho in their first home game of the season and while the Vandals are a very bad team, it was a complete domination after falling behind 6-0. Ball St. is off to a 2-0 start but both of those games were at home making this its first trip on the road in 2013. the Cardinals defeated Illinois St. by 23 points and Army by 26 points but those can certainly be considered misleading finals as Ball St. won the yardage battle by 64 yards and one yard respectively in those games. I feel that is a truer indication of what actually happened as looking at the scoreboard alone will not do much for you. Following a 9-4 season last year but losing 24 lettermen, there were, and still are, some questions surrounding this team so putting the Cardinals in the role of the road favorite in their first game of the season on the highway is overaggressive. The difference maker here could be the North Texas offense squaring off against a very mediocre Cardinals defense. The Mean Green have exhibited great balance offensively (83 rushing attempts and 63 passing). Senior quarterback Derek Thompson is in his fifth season (he played sparingly as a freshman and was injured early in his sophomore season) of competition, and his experience shows. He has completed 75 percent (42 of 56) of his passes for 544 yards and four scores through two games. The big plays have paved the way as already this season, the Mean Green have generated nine plays of 20 yards or more. I am a big fan of Ball St. quarterback Keith Wenning as he is off to another fine start this season. He was named the MAC West Player of the Week after a solid performance against Army but going back he has had struggles on the road as last year, seven of his 10 interceptions came on the highway. North Texas gets a bad rap because of its defense but with eight starters back from last year, the unit will be fine here. This is another situation where we play against teams where the line is +3 to -3 that had a winning record last season playing a team that had a losing season, in non-conference games. This situation is 36-11 ATS (76.6 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (162) North Texas Mean Green

09-14-13 | Boston College v. USC -13.5 | Top | 7-35 | Win | 100 | 52 h 5 m | Show |
USC got embarrassed at home last week against Washington St. as the offense was held in check and managed a mere seven points. It was just the third time since 2003 that the Trojans were held to single digits on offense during the regular season and taking a look around shows that people are off this team already. That is perfect as I see it since the value is now on the USC side. It is proven by the fact this line was -21.5 when it was released as a game of the year line back in July. Sure, the Trojans are a public team but that public is starting to shy away which allows us a great bounceback opportunity. Boston College meanwhile is off to a 2-0 start following a win last Friday over Wake Forest on national television. Now the Eagles have to travel across the country to face a very hungry team in search of a payback victory. They defeated Villanova in their first game and while both were double-digit wins, the Eagles won the yardage battle by just 58 and 68 total yards in the first two games. That is far from dominating and now hitting the road for the first time, I think they are overvalued. One bad play made the difference against the Cougars. USC had the ball at the Cougars' 39-yard line with a chance to extend the 7-0 lead just before halftime, but quarterback Cody Kessler threw an interception to cornerback Damante Horton who returned it 70 yards untouched to tie the game. Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin picked Kessler on Monday to make his third start of the season against Boston College. Kiffin also said Kessler will no longer split practice work and playing time with Max Wittek, who has played in the second half of the Trojans first two games. While the offense has been a work in progress, the defense is the strength of the Trojans as they are ranked 11th in total defense and 19th in scoring defense. I expect that to continue against a Boston College offense ranked 83rd in the nation. USC has a solid situation on its side as we play against teams in the first month of the season, after closing out last season with two or more straight losses going up against an opponent that was a bowl team from last season who lost their last three games. This situation is 26-4 ATS (86.7 percent) over the last 10 seasons including a perfect 3-0 ATS this season. The Trojans are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games after accumulating less than 275 total yards in their previous game while Boston College has gone 0-6 ATS in it last six road games. 10* (148) USC Trojans

09-14-13 | Bowling Green v. Indiana -2.5 | Top | 10-42 | Win | 100 | 49 h 52 m | Show |
After blowing out Indiana St. in its opener, Indiana had a lot of momentum going into its second game against Navy but the Hoosiers came in with no energy and were behind 17-0 midway through the second quarter. The six-point final deficit would be as close as they would get in what turned out to be a horrific home loss. Now it will be up to Indiana to regroup and bounce back to avoid back-to-back losses before facing an extremely tough four-game stretch on the schedule. Indiana was, and still is, on the radar for me as a team that could have a very good season and there is experience all over the place following their 4-8 season from a year ago. The Hoosiers lost four of those games by four points or fewer and that tends to come around the following season. I played against Bowling Green last week and it was a bad call on my part as the Falcons went into Kent St. and hammered the Golden Flashes. They outgained them by 274 total yards but they held just a two-point lead at the break before scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half. I am still not completely sold on Bowling Green as a win over Tulsa to open the season looked impressive at first until the Golden Hurricane needed a field goal last week with no time left to defeat Colorado St. at home. Kent St. meanwhile was without running back Dri Archer (bad info received on my part) last week and apparently the narrow seven-point win over Liberty was not an aberration after all. Now comes a true test for the Falcons. While Indiana is far from the elite in the Big Ten, it is still a Big Ten with Big Ten athletes. The Indiana defense got shredded by Navy last week on the ground as it allowed 444 yards rushing but the Hoosiers will not be seeing anymore of that triple option attack. Put them against an average offense and a similar one that they go against in practice and they will be fine which is what I expect here. Indiana doesn't plan to spend much time figuring out where it can alter scheme or personnel. Instead, head coach Kevin Wilson wants players to maintain confidence, wipe away memories of the Navy debacle, improve fundamentals and most important, try to create some turnovers. On the flip side, the offense has carried the weight for Indiana thus far and while it will be facing one of the top defenses in the MAC, the Falcons defense has had its share of issues against teams from BCS conferences. Here, we play against teams where the line is +3 to -3 that had a winning record last season playing a team that had a losing season, in non-conference games. This situation is 36-11 ATS (76.6 percent) over the last 10 seasons. 10* (124) Indiana Hoosiers

09-09-13 | Philadelphia Eagles +3.5 v. Washington Redskins | Top | 33-27 | Win | 100 | 12 h 40 m | Show |
Last night, we got our first glimpse of what the NFC East could be like this season and it wasn't pretty as Dallas and New York put forth a very ugly effort. Tonight, the other two teams square off as the new look Eagles head to Washington to take on the projected divisional championship by the majority. The big storyline for Washington is quarterback Robert Griffin III who is back in the starting lineup after tearing his ACL just over eight months ago. He says he is ready and that he would not be out there otherwise and that I believe. But while his knee may be back to full health, he will be showing some rust as he did not take a snap during the preseason which puts him in a tough spot here. On the other side, the Eagles brought in Chip Kelly from Oregon and with him comes a brand new system which is obviously tricky to pick up right away. But I still give that edge to Philadelphia as while it may take time to learn, it is impossible for a defense to prepare for something it has never seen before. The Redskins can look at all the preseason film they want. But Kelly, like most NFL coaches, didn't give much away in his game-planning for those contests. In six career starts against Washington, Michael Vick is 3-1 with 805 passing yards, eight touchdowns and only two interceptions. He has also ran for two touchdowns, while rushing for over 100 yards. The big game could come from LeSean McCoy however. He looked unstoppable in the preseason in Kelly's new offense, and he will be utilized much more than he was in Andy Reid's pass happy west coast offense. The Eagles lost both meetings a year ago and after a disastrous 4-12 season, they will be out to open the Kelly era with a victory and while motivation will not be lacking on the other side, Philadelphia has more answers to the questions coming into this one. Additionally, the Redskins defense puts Philadelphia into a solid situation where we play against favorites in a divisional matchup that allowed 5.4 yppl or more last season. This situation is 48-20 ATS (70.6 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Going back to last season, the Redskins have been the much better team against the spread and because of their 4-0 preseason, I feel the value is on the side of the Eagles as that hook on top of the field goal is huge in my opinion. 10* (479) Philadelphia Eagles

09-08-13 | NY Giants v. Dallas Cowboys -3 | 31-36 | Win | 100 | 57 h 44 m | Show
The Giants and Cowboys battle on Sunday night in a big divisional game right out of the gate. Neither team lit it up during the preseason as both went 1-3 but those games cannot be read into too much. Dallas is coming off consecutive 8-8 seasons and has not made the playoffs since 2009 so head coach Jason Garrett is firmly sitting in the hot seat right now. As is the case every year, expectations are high but this could be the year Dallas finally breaks through and I believe it comes down to the defense. And it is that defense that will cause headaches for the Giants. Under new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who returns to the NFL after four years at the college ranks, the Cowboys have switched from their longtime 3-4 defensive philosophy to a 4-3 base. The Tampa 2 as it has been commonly referred to has actually been a nightmare scheme for Eli Manning to go against as he has a passer rating of 90.0 or better only twice in 12 games against the Tampa 2. Additionally, he has passed for more than 200 yards only three times. Things could turn from bad to worse because of his offensive line. They lost starting right tackle David Diehl and starting center David Baas to injury two weeks ago and have had to do a lot of reshuffling. This year's first-round pick, Justin Pugh, is now the starting right tackle. Left guard Kevin Boothe moved inside to play center, and James Brewer, a fourth-round pick from 2011, is starting at left guard. The Giants defense meanwhile is a work in progress still. After having 48 sacks in 2011, they had just 33 last year and their secondary is a mess so Tony Romo could be in store for a big game if his protection holds up. The loss of safety Stevie Brown has not made enough noise as his loss is absolutely huge in the secondary. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is listed as questionable but he has been practicing so he should play but he is not close to 100 percent. Based on historical trends, the Giants would be the easy play here as the Cowboys are a dreadful 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games and last season they were a dismal 0-6 ATS as home favorites. It is also interesting to note that the Giants have never lost in the Cowboys new home as they are a perfect 4-0 at AT&T Stadium so motivation to end that drought will be on the side of the Cowboys. I am not a fan of the hook in this line but I don't think it comes into play tonight as the Cowboys take advantage of the matchups and finally break through in their new stadium. 9* (478) Dallas Cowboys

09-08-13 | Miami Dolphins v. Cleveland Browns +1 | 23-10 | Loss | -110 | 49 h 22 m | Show
Miami is a sleeper pick in the AFC by many and even ESPN the Magazine has the Dolphins winning the division following a 7-9 season. The only possible way is if the Patriots implode as it is the weakest division in football and despite some solid offseason acquisitions, I really do not see much coming from this team. The Dolphins spent $200 million but part of that went to tight end Dustin Keller who is now injured and lost for the season. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill should be better than his rookie campaign and he does heave weapons around him but this is far from an explosive unit. Defensively, Miami lost its top two tacklers and the cornerback satiation remains a question mark. If there is a sleeper team in the AFC, I would give that nod to Cleveland over Miami. This team has not won more than five games in a season since 2007 but it will be up to one player to change that. It was not a good rookie season for Brandon Weeden and as a matter of fact, it was pretty horrible. That can be expected by rookies although many have taken the NFL by storm in their rookie seasons. However, I think he is on for a rebound season and head coach Rob Chudzinski said he is "right on track". In three exhibition games, he completed 30-50 passes (60 percent) for 334 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and finishing with a passer rating of 99.9. He is under a new coaching staff and while that hurts some quarterbacks making a big change, he is more comfortable with the vertical, downfield passing game offensive coordinator Norv Turner has implemented. On defense, the Browns will be more aggressive under new defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Cleveland is expected to blitz much more often in 2013, a philosophy helped by the off-season acquisition of Paul Kruger. Solid linebackers and a good secondary should improve the entire defense this season. The Browns amazingly have gone 1-13 in season openers since coming back to Cleveland including a 1-12 record at home. Think this opener is important? Cornerback Joe Haden, who is 0-3 in season openers, captured the mood of the locker room on Wednesday. "It's not a kill shot (if we lose), but we have to get over that hump," he said. "It's not gonna be, 'Ok, let's get the next one. Let's get the next one.' We have to win this first game." We are catching a very good number as a win means a cover and with the new regime in place, we can expect a huge home field advantage on Sunday that carries the Browns to victory. 9* (466) Cleveland Browns

09-08-13 | Oakland Raiders +10.5 v. Indianapolis Colts | Top | 17-21 | Win | 100 | 50 h 42 m | Show |
Week One of the regular season can be a tricky one for both bettors and linesmakers. Setting the lines is tough as the main parameters are based on last season's performances and this year's expectations and this line is clearly taking those into account. The Colts had one of the best turnaround seasons ever as they went from going 2-14 in 2011 to 11-5 in 2012 and earning a playoff berth. Indianapolis is now back on the map and expectations are high once again but as good as the Colts were last season, they were never favored even close to what they are favored by in Week One against the Raiders. I'm not saying last year was a fluke but of the 11 wins Indianapolis had, six of those came by four points or fewer while another came in overtime by six points. Adding to this, the Colts became the first team in NFL history to win 11 or more games during the regular season while being outscored by their opponents. The Colts covered 11 games last season but six of those were as underdogs and the five they covered as favorites, they were a 4.5-point chalk or less each time. The Raiders are not expected to be a very good team this season as they have one of the lowest regular season win totals which is 5.5. They went 4-12 last season which after two straight 8-8 seasons so they are definitely going the wrong way but this is the NFL and strange things can happen, case in point the Colts last season. Oakland was not very good on the road, going 1-7 but again all of this is playing into this line which is why it is as high as it is. Looking at matchups, stopping the Colts offense and quarterback Andrew Luck is not an easy task but if ever there is a matchup that suits the Raiders, this is it. Their secondary is looking very good as Charles Woodson, D.J. Hayden, Tracy Porter, and Mike Jenkins form a great unit. The Colts are thin in the backfield so the Raiders should see a lot of throws from Luck and let's not forget, he had 18 interceptions a year ago. On the other side, Terrelle Pryor will get the start and while he has proven nothing, the read-option he will utilize could cause some problems for the Colts. I am a contrarian by nature, especially in the NFL, and this is the ultimate in contrarian as the public is all over the Colts which is just the way I prefer it the first week of the season. 10* (471) Oakland Raiders

09-08-13 | Seattle Seahawks v. Carolina Panthers +4 | Top | 12-7 | Loss | -110 | 50 h 33 m | Show |
There are four home underdogs on Sunday and I feel this one is the best of the bunch. As said before, Week One of the regular season can be a tricky one for both bettors and linesmakers as setting the lines is tough with the main parameters based on last season's performances and this year's expectations. Seattle was outstanding last year by going 11-5 in the regular season and then splitting in the playoffs. The Seahawks closed by winning five straight to end the regular season and then taking out Washington in the first round of the playoffs after falling behind early before losing by two at Atlanta in the Divisional Round. They are now considered a Super Bowl contender by many and their +350 to win the NFC certainly proves that. Based on all of this, there is no way they could not be a road favorite to open the season and it has a step further as they are favored by more than a field goal. Seattle put together its second straight undefeated preseason but lest we forget that after going 4-0 last season, it opened the regular season at Arizona and lost outright as a point favorite. Now the Seahawks have to travel to the east coast for an early game and while rumor has it, they are preparing the right way for it, it is not an easy task. After closing 2011 with wins in four of their final six games, expectations were high for the Panthers last year, especially after the great rookie season Cam Newton had at quarterback. Unfortunately, Carolina would start the season 2-8 and the season was lost. The Panthers did go 5-1 over their last six games including winning their last four but this time around, expectations are not nearly as high and that helps us with public perception which ultimately helps us with the line. One huge edge for the Panthers here is the banged up Seattle defense as Bruce Irvin starts his suspension, Chris Clemons won't play while still recovering from his knee injury, Cliff Avril is nursing a hamstring, and Seattle's two starting defensive tackles are battling groin injuries. As for the Carolina defense, it improved from 2011 to 2012 and should be better this year thanks to rookies Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short who will contribute right away. I expect Newton to have a big season as he will be playing with a chip on his shoulder amid the criticism he has taken but he played as good as any quarterback in the second half of last season. Don't be surprised to see the outright win here. 10* (468) Carolina Panthers

09-07-13 | Minnesota v. New Mexico State +15.5 | Top | 44-21 | Loss | -110 | 59 h 41 m | Show |
We played against Minnesota last Thursday and while the final score showed a blowout win by the Gophers, it never should have been that way. Minnesota was outgained by 99 total yards but it was fortunate to score three touchdowns by other than the offense as it returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown, returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown, all in a span of just over a quarter. The 28-point win is obviously misleading as both the offense and defense was inconsistent and now the Gophers make a trip across country and are being asked to lay over two scores. They have won only nine road games since 2007 and have been a road favorite just a few times, most recently last season when they were favored by 8.5 points at UNLV and escaped with a win in three overtimes. This is another prime example of the markets taking a result too much into consideration when not the whole picture was looked at. New Mexico St. is coming off an ugly loss at Texas as it went down by 49 points while getting outgained by 369 total yards. The Aggies trailed by just a 14-7 score at halftime however so while the second half was a disaster, they showed they could compete with a team like Texas and Minnesota is no Texas. The Aggies offense proved to be light years ahead of where it was in 2012 with a no-huddle attack that has been implemented, one that saw the Aggies observe Texas' defense, make the appropriate play call at the line of scrimmage and then attack from there. Minnesota does have a strong defense but after allowing 419 total yards to UNLV, I don't see it stopping New Mexico St. enough to try and cover this massive number. On the other side, the Gophers are going to be without starting running back Donnell Kirkwood as he has a sprained right ankle and is not expected to play Saturday. New Mexico St. is an Independent this year which means the schedule is pretty tough but not brutal and this is one of those swing games that it needs to win. Even if it doesn't happen, we have a big number to lean back on. 10* (370) New Mexico St. Aggies

09-07-13 | Sam Houston State +41 v. Texas A&M | 28-65 | Win | 100 | 58 h 40 m | Show
If you have 5Dimes, Betonline, CRIS or SIA, this line is available as well at a few other smaller joints. Not many people know about Sam Houston St. but it is one of the best FCS teams in the country and it is currently ranked fourth in the FCS Coaches Poll. Once again, the preseason polls predicted the Sam Houston State Bearkats as the favorite to win their third straight Southland Conference title and the Bearkats are also the two-time national runner-up, losing twice to North Dakota St. in the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Division I FCS finals. The Bearkats have to replace several starters from last year's team, but the lopsided wins and deep playoff runs the last two seasons has given underclassmen game experience and practice time so experience is not an issue. They are coming off a win over Houston Baptist and it wasn't even close as they won 74-0 while piling up 455 total yards including 365 yards on the ground. Because it is an FCS team we are catching an enormous line that should no way be as big as it is. While the FCS factor has a lot to do with it, so does the Texas A&M factor as the Aggies are becoming an extremely public team because of Johnny Manziel. Not to say this team isn't good but despite a 52-31 win over rice, the Aggies were outgained by 23 total yards. The defense remains paper thin as three defensive starters will complete two-game suspensions that were announced just before the Rice kickoff. A fourth defensive starter and a defensive backup will sit the first half against the Bearkats. This after Texas A&M lost six defensive starters from a year ago so while stopping the Aggies offense will not happen for Sam Houston St., stopping the Bearkats offense will be an issue for the Aggies. Keeping whoever they have healthy is the goal for Texas A&M as not only is this considered a cupcake game but it has a much anticipated rematch against Alabama on deck for next week. Certainly looking ahead to that game will find a lot of Aggies players guilty and rightfully so. In the meantime, we will grab the generous points that is flying under the radar. 9* (437) Sam Houston St. Bearkats

09-07-13 | North Texas v. Ohio -4 | Top | 21-27 | Win | 100 | 58 h 2 m | Show |
We were on the complete wrong side with Ohio on Sunday as it got smashed at Louisville 49-7. While I do not think the Bobcats are as bad as they played against the Cardinals, I definitely underestimated Louisville in that game and while I still feel the Cardinals are overrated, the amount has certainly decreased. Now Ohio heads back home and takes a big step down in class as it welcomes North Texas. The Bobcats are coming off their fourth consecutive winning season a year ago and despite just 12 starters back, those returning starters are key players and big time playmakers on offense for that matter. The offense managed only 273 total yards against Louisville but facing a Mean Green defense will get them back on track. North Texas allowed only six points to Idaho in its opener but did give up 369 total yards as it was fortunate than the Vandals put the ball on the ground four times, losing three of those fumbles. Because of the blowout loss suffered in their opener, the value is clearly on the side of the Bobcats which are 15-3 over their last three years at home. North Texas won by 34 points while outgaining Idaho by 201 total yards and while that win looks impressive, the Vandals are expected to be one of the worst teams in the FBS this season so we cannot take a lot away from that victory. The Mean Green are now 8-4 at home since the start of the 2010 season but they have gone 2-11 on the road over that stretch and going back further, they are 8-38 over their last 46 road games going back to 2006. To their credit, this is expected to be one of the better North Texas teams we have seen in a few years but until it can get better play on the road, they will be a fade at these short prices. The Mean Green were a single digit road underdog only once last season and they lost that game by 17 points at Marshall. Additionally, playing well in back-to-back games has been few and far between at north Texas is 4-18 ATS in its last 22 games following a win. Meanwhile, the Bobcats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game. I expect a huge effort from Ohio as it takes its frustrations out Saturday night. 10* (318) Ohio Bobcats

09-07-13 | San Diego State +28 v. Ohio State | 7-42 | Loss | -110 | 54 h 22 m | Show
As I have mentioned elsewhere, we cannot take a whole lot of stock in some of the opening games last week as some teams are not as good as they looked while others are not as bad as they looked. San Diego St. falls into the latter. In total last week, there were eight FCS teams that upset FBS teams including the Aztecs losing to Eastern Illinois. They didn't just lose though, they were hammered at home by 21 points. Clearly, San Diego St. did not show up which was a surprise coming from a Rocky Long coached team and one that had inspirations of being a sleeper in the BCS. The Aztecs had gone to three consecutive bowl games and they were picked to make a run in the MWC this year and that is still a possibility despite that horrible loss to the Panthers. To their credit, Eastern Illinois is a very solid team but that loss was still inexcusable and if there is a game to now get fired up for, this is the one. We played against Ohio St. last week and we will fade the Buckeyes again here. They played very well against Buffalo as they won by 20 points while outgaining the Bulls by 202 total yards but I suspected that line was inflated which was definitely the case. Because of the Aztecs upset loss, I feel the line is inflated once again and not only because of that but because of the public perception of Ohio St. and its number two ranking. San Diego St. needs to clamp down on defense, which coming into the season was its strongest attribute but it is the offense that needs to gets things going to compete here. The receivers dropped several passes, and quarterback Adam Dingwell threw four interceptions, fumbled three times and finished 27-of-63 for 318 yards. I feel they can definitely turn things around here as last Saturday marked the first time in 28 years that Ohio St. has started the season with four new starters on the defensive line. Buffalo was unable to convert on third down, going just 3-14 but the veteran Aztecs can do much better than that. Ohio St. travels out to California next week so it will be playing on a short week meaning there could be some resting of players if it is sitting on any sort of late lead. Ohio St. is 0-6 ATS in its last six home games following a home win. 9* (327) San Diego St. Aztecs

09-07-13 | Bowling Green v. Kent State +7.5 | Top | 41-22 | Loss | -110 | 51 h 39 m | Show |
Bowling Green put together a very surprising run a season ago as after opening 1-3, it went on to win seven of its last eight regular season games before losing to San Jose St. in the Military Bowl. That success coupled with 19 returning starters has given the Falcons some pretty lofty expectations as they have been tabbed by many to with the MAC East ahead of Ohio. With expectations comes public backing which in turn affects the lines that are posted and I feel that is the case here. It doesn't hurt matters that Bowling Green destroyed Tulsa in its season opener at home 34-7 while outgaining the Golden Hurricane by 123 total yards. The Falcons were a favorite by a field goal in that one and despite a switch to the road, they are actually now favored by more than a touchdown. Kent St. is coming off a win of its own as it defeated Liberty in its season opener. It was far from a dominating performance however as it won by just a touchdown over its FCS opponent but a win is a win and if for nothing else, the close call helps us out with the line this week. Still, the Golden Flashes outgained Liberty by 139 total yards including 135 yards on the ground despite an injury to running back Dri Archer who was hurt after just three carries and did not return. Archer is considered a sleeper Heisman candidate and the good news is that the injury suffered was minor as it was a twisted ankle so he will be ready to go. Kent St. has two very solid situations on its side as well. First, we play on underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points in the first two weeks of the year, bowl team from prior season who lost their last two games. This situation is 34-8 ATS (81 percent) since 1992. Second, we play on home underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points after one or more consecutive straight up wins, in the first two weeks of the season. This situation is 40-12 ATS (76.9 percent) since 1992. Over the last five seasons, there two scenarios have combined to go an outstanding 24-2 ATS. Additionally, the Golden Flashes are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games following a win while Bowling Green is 4-12-1 ATS in its last 17 games against teams with a winning record. 10* (360) Kent St. Golden Flashes

09-06-13 | Central Florida v. Florida International +24.5 | Top | 38-0 | Loss | -110 | 36 h 56 m | Show |
This is what we call an overreaction line after the first week. Central Florida rolled over Akron by 31 points at home as a 24-point favorite and now it hits the road favored by more points this week. The Zips are not a good team as they have won only three games during the last three seasons and came into the game against the Knights riding a 26-game road losing streak which was extended to 27 games. Central Florida did what it had to do and it could very well do the same here however laying this number on the road is ludicrous especially when it is 9-13 ATS as a road chalk of any kind under George O'Leary and has a game at Penn St. on deck so the lookahead possibility is there. Additionally, Central Florida has gone 1-4 ATS in its last five games as a double-digit road favorite We played and won against Florida International last week as it was hammered 43-10 while getting outgained by 405 total yards. Rarely will you see a team play horrid game consecutively (and vice versa for that matter) and this number is definitely an overreaction to that loss against the Terrapins. That was more of a play on Maryland more than anything else and I am banking on a much better performance from the Golden Panthers as they head home for this one. Adding even more fire to the pot is the fact that they closed last season by dropping their final five games at home. The Knights defeated Florida International at home last season by 13 points as a 17-point favorite and instead of the line going down based on the venue change, it has gone up by over a touchdown and that is a huge swing for a team that is not considered to be an overly dominating team to begin with. The Knights are 0-6 ATS in their last six games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game while going 1-8 ATS in their last nine games following a home win. Meanwhile, Florida International is 5-1 ATS in its last six games as a double-digit underdog against an opponent that is coming off a double-digit win. 10* (484) Florida International Golden Panthers

09-05-13 | Baltimore Ravens +7.5 v. Denver Broncos | Top | 27-49 | Loss | -110 | 35 h 37 m | Show |
Prior to last season when the Giants lost against Dallas on Thursday night to open the season, we had seen the past Super Bowl champions win their season openers in each of the previous three years starting with Pittsburgh in 2009, New Orleans in 2010 and Green Bay in 2011. It needs to be noted that all three of those teams were favored and at home and the Ravens did not get the luxury of getting a home game to open the season because of a conflict with the Orioles. Baltimore was already set to host the Chicago White Sox next door at 7:05 and because of a shared parking lot, both could play the same night and a compromise could not be made. I feel the Ravens will be playing with a chip on their shoulder because of this. Since the offseason started, the Ravens, in particular linebacker Terrell Suggs, have talked about the lack of respect given the team, and head coach John Harbaugh has echoed those sentiments throughout training camp. The defending Super Bowl Champions will be out to prove the doubters wrong. Denver will no doubt be amped up for this game as this is the matchup that saw their season come to an end last year. The Broncos were 7-1 at home during the regular season with most of those being blowouts so they are obviously favored for a reason. I think the line is way too much even though it is less than the 9.5-point spread from that playoff game. Baltimore did lose a lot from last year especially on the defensive side, namely Ray Lewis and Ed Reed but I think the defense will be improved as they are bigger, faster, younger and stronger on defense and last season they weren't that great to begin with. On the other side, a sloppy preseason on offense should have no one worried as Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell says the Ravens' offense could display some different characteristics now that the games actually count. As far as the Broncos go, they are the favorites to win the Super Bowl but they have some questions as well. Defensively, they are without Von Miller and Champ Bailey isn't close to 100 percent while the loss of outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil to Baltimore is huge. Offensively, Peyton Manning is still one of the best quarterbacks around but his offensive line and running game are average at best and he will be under pressure all night. Obviously, Denver will be out for revenge but winning and covering are two different matters. 10* (451) Baltimore Ravens

09-02-13 | Florida State -10 v. Pittsburgh | Top | 41-13 | Win | 100 | 124 h 27 m | Show |
Despite a 12-2 season a year ago, it was considered a disappointing campaign for Florida St. The Seminoles came in ranked seventh in the preseason polls and they were considered a strong contender to play for the BCS Championship. Things started well with five straight double-digit wins but then an uncalled for loss at NC State by a point ended those championship hopes. They would go on to lose to sixth ranked Florida at home later in the season before winning the final two games. This season, expectations are lower as Florida St. is not ranked in the preseason top ten and that could be a better thing as flying under the radar early could be a benefit, especially at the betting window. I am not one to bet a lot of road favorites but I feel this line is way off and possibly for the wrong reason. The Seminoles lost a ton of talent as they will have to replace 11 players that were drafted including quarterback E.J. Manuel. Instead of rebuilding though, this team is reloading. While head coach Jimbo Fisher's early classes had to play right away, the staff has carefully selected immediate-impact contributors while allowing a number of talented recruits to develop further. Replacing Manuel is Jameis Winston who is a redshirt freshman and while his first start is on the road, it is no issue as this kid is the real deal. He will have four starters back on the offensive line to protect him and give him lanes and he has numerous playmakers at his disposal. On defense, the Seminoles will have the ability to rotate as many as 10 tackles and ends so the loss of six starters from the front seven is not nearly as bad is it would be for most teams. I do not see Pittsburgh doing much on offense against this athletic defense. The Panthers starting quarterback is Tom Savage who has not played since 2010 after transferring from Rutgers to Arizona and then Arizona to here. Likely starting running back Rushel Shell transferred while five of the top seven receivers from last year are gone. The defense will be asked to carry the load until the offense can find its chemistry and while this unit was outstanding last year, that was against a weak schedule. That changes now in the move to the ACC and the Panthers do not have the speed to slow down Florida St. as the Seminoles dominate both sides of the ball. 10* (219) Florida St. Seminoles

09-01-13 | Ohio +21 v. Louisville | Top | 7-49 | Loss | -110 | 96 h 7 m | Show |
This game sets up very similar to a play that was made on Saturday as we are going against early season hype which has caused an inflated line. Louisville is coming in as a sleeper pick to make it to the BCS Championship following an 11-2 season last year that including a 33-23 win over Florida in the Sugar Bowl. There is plenty of talent on this team and the Cardinals return 16 starters overall but I am far from sold on this team making a huge run. Even if they do run the table and go undefeated, it will be difficult to include them in the championship game as their schedule is a cakewalk. Entering the season, Louisville's schedule is ranked 98th out of 126 FBS teams and it can be argued that the toughest game on the slate does not come until the final game of the season at Cincinnati. Because of the preseason hype, the Cardinals are favored by close to three touchdowns in most shops and the recommendation is to wait this one out until we get closer to gametime as I expect it to hit 21 points everywhere with the possibility of even going over that in some places. Ohio is no slouch and with the disciplined way this team plays, walking out of Louisville with an outright win is far from out of the question. The Bobcats are going off a 9-4 season and it certainly could have been a lot better. Ohio opened up 7-0 but then injuries started piling up after more than a dozen players suffered season-ending injuries in 2012. The team is healthy once again as head coach Frank Solich lightened the load during camp to try and keep his team fresh and injury free and the plan worked. Offensively, this team is loaded as it returns nearly all skill position players, with eight returning starters players overall. This includes quarterback Tyler Tettlton, running back Beau Blankenship and receiver Donte Foster. Defensively, the Bobcats lost a lot up front but they return leading tackler Keith Moore at linebacker and they have a healthy group of defensive backs that a year ago were devastated by injuries. Slowing down the Cardinals offense will not be easy but the Bobcats offense brings enough to the table to keep up. If Ohio can create some turnovers on defense and protect the ball on offense, it could be the Bobcats that that move into position to make that magical run to the championship instead of Louisville. 10* (215) Ohio Bobcats

08-31-13 | Boise State v. Washington Huskies -3.5 | Top | 6-38 | Win | 100 | 79 h 55 m | Show |
Saturday night, Washington will be playing at Husky Stadium for the first time since 2011 after it was forced to play at CenturyLink Field because of renovations. This will be one crazy atmosphere and one that the home team will take full advantage of. This is a rematch from the Las Vegas Bowl last year in which Boise St. won by two points so the Huskies will be out for some early season payback. The Huskies have gone 7-6 in each of the last three seasons and this is the best team on paper over that stretch as they have the experience and talent to make a run in the Pac 12. Quarterback Keith Price has a regression from the previous season but we should see him rebound this year as he has numerous weapons around him. Running back Bishop Sankey and wide receiver Kasen Williams form as dynamic duo as there is in the conference. The problem last season was a banged up offensive line so keeping that unit healthy will be key. Since this is the first game, we are catching them at their healthiest. The defense was extremely solid last year and it was a very young defense on top of that so a year older will have them even better. Year in and year out, Boise St. head coach Chris Peterson brings in great teams but this could be one of his biggest challenges yet. Six starters need to be replaced on each side, and some big holes have to be filled on the defensive front six and the offensive line, two hugely important areas that go a long way in success or lack thereof. The Broncos know all about being tested early in the season and they would like to learn from their loss against Michigan St. last year as they were outgained 461-206 but it won't be that easy in this environment. You hate to say 'must win' game this early in the season but this one qualifies for the Huskies as they need some early season momentum going their way. "Nah, we're not over it," head coach Steve Sarkisian said of the way 2012 ended. "We're not over it. We're antsy. We're pissed. We're not over it, and we won't be until we get to go hit somebody else." This game also falls into the great situation of playing an unranked home favorite against a ranked road underdog. 10* (210) Washington Huskies
